While discussing gay marriage with the Post, he said, "Hard-wired into us is a dictionary, and the dictionary defines marriage as between one man, one woman for life, please God, leading to the procreation of human life. And if we begin to tamper with the very definition of marriage, then we're going to be in big trouble. We're not anti-gay—we're pro the most basic definition of marriage."
Dolan said that he saw the logic of gay marriage advocates who might link the church's opposition to its defense in years past of segregation, also once justified by some under the notion of natural law. But he called that notion "a tragic misinterpretation."
The archbishop also made a point to say that he did not think Governor Paterson's press conference announcing his proposal to legalize gay marriage in New York the day after Dolan's installation was at all meant as any sort of insult.
Dolan also addressed the issue of priests within the Catholic church being able to marry with both the Post and in an interview with WCBS 2. He followed the lead taken by Cardinal Egan in his waning days as archbishop in going as far as saying that the issue should be opened for discussion. He emphasized that he does not support lifting the marriage ban and doesn't believe that a move to do so would be much of a boost in addressing the lack of new candidates for the priesthood. He said, "Most of the young men who are attracted to the priesthood are so because they find celibacy very attractive."

I'd like to preface this link with two statements: 1) I am unabashedly Catholic, but 2) I wholeheartedly disagree with the Church on the issue of gay marriage and homosexuality in general. Anyway, the link - http://www.slate.com/id/2215628/ - is to a piece Slate did earlier this month on the changing dictionary definitions of marriage.
I also disagree with that last quote from Dolan and think that he actually does an injustice to the struggle that these men have with whether or not to become priests.
"Most of the young men who are attracted to the priesthood are so because they find celibacy very attractive." creep-o alert.
I think there should be a slow down on procreation - if we keep getting more octomoms and other super birth surges, our resources might run out w/ all these humans eating away at everything.
If gay marriage is legalized and that couple wants to adopt they'll be providing a home, education etc for orphans. What's wrong with that?
No one wants to tamper with the Catholic Church's definition of marriage.
Exactly! We're not talking about a religious definition of marriage. We're talking about a State definition of marriage.
One question though: while I wouldn't think that religious officials are obligated to marry people just because it's legal, could they be sued for discrimination if they're performing religious ceremonies for heterosexuals but not homosexuals?? Or white couples instead of couples of color or inter-racial couples, for that matter?
I would actually like to see it in the law that no one can be forced to marry someone if it is against their religious beliefs (government officials excluded). That way the silly lawsuit argument can be easily shut down.
As for race-based objections.. if you can truly prove that is your religious belief, I don't think I have a problem with it (obviously I wouldn't agree with such a religion). I'm not sure if you could truly prove that, though. There is a pretty high barrier to using religious convictions as a defense for breaking laws.
So Dolan likes the Mets... Wait - he's Jewish?
Maybe Dolan can talk about something really important like how the church should pay taxes like the rest of us.
right? if they want separation of church and state, he should shut his piehole about legalizing gay marriage. if they're not paying taxes then they should worry about their choir boys etc.
Isn't marriage like a business contract? 2 parties agree to certain things they both believe in yada yada yada?
They'll do it when the Protestants and the Jews agree to it.
I know many males who find the idea of no sex very attractive. Then they hit puberty.
You know what else is a tragic misinterpretation? Most of what Dolan stands for.
"We're not anti-gay—we're pro the most basic definition of marriage."
but wouldn't adding the restriction "only between a man and a woman" make the definition LESS basic than "only between two people"?
This just makes me think of the KKK's statement "We're not anti-black people, we're just pro-white people!"
I am so sick of this issue, mainly because it shouldn't be an issue in the first place. We're supposed to keep church and state separate. That means that if we allow one couple to do something legally, we have to allow all the other couples to do it legally as well. Anything else is discrimination and discrimination on the basis of religion is just as stupid as discrimination on the basis of race. Anything else is letting church into our government. Anything else is UNACCEPTABLE.
Churches can do whatever the hell they want. But they can't tell everyone else what to do, and they sure as hell can't use the government to force everyone else to live according to their beliefs. Why do they try so hard to mentally rape the world?
"Most of the young men who are attracted to the priesthood are so because they find celibacy very attractive."
AND they find the idea of pre-pubescent altar boys wearing only tight speedos and a crucifix VERY, VERY, VERY attractive.
Let us pray.
i think being a mets fan is the only thing this doofus has going for him

"Most of the young men who are attracted to the priesthood are so because they find celibacy very attractive."
They are attracted to the priesthood because they don't want their families to know that they're really gay. Catholicism is really a very guilt-based religion (second only to having a Jewish mother).
From a long-ago quote from a US government official :
"He no playa the game, He no make-a the rules". Kinda loses something now that we don't have an Italian Pope, but still funny after all these years. Was it Earl Butz?
Yep, just Wiki'd it. Earl Butz, 1974 in Rome. Guy was quite the character.
