Surveillance images of the suspected Craigslist killer at left; far right, photograph of Philip Markoff
Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said, “This is a compelling case with a myriad of evidence." Apparently a search of Markoff's apartment "turned up guns and plastic ties" (Brisman's hand had a plastic handcuff) and police suspect Markoff may have been robbing—and resorting to violence—to pay off gambling debts.
The Boston police had released surveillance images showing the person of interest: A tall, blond, clean-cut man looking at his cellphone. Rhode Island police revealed that a woman was attacked in a similar robbery attempt—the victim had advertised dancing services on Craigslist—and also released surveillance images. The NY Times reports that 150 people called the police with tips, but Conley said "high-tech leads" were as critical to the investigation as "old-fashioned shoe leather" detective work. Markoff had apparently been under surveillance, but it's unclear for how long; he was arrested during a traffic stop yesterday afternoon, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said, “We are very, very happy to have this man off the street in such a timely way."
Markoff is engaged to be married to NJ native Megan McAllister. The pair's wedding website (Gawker has screengrabs) says they met while both volunteering at an ER in Albany: "We volunteered at the Emergecy Room together and spent about 2 months pushing stretchers down hallways and bringing blood and urine samples to pathology together before our first date on November 11, 2005!!" McAllister sent an e-mail to ABC News defending her fiance, "All I have to say to you is Philip is a beautiful person inside and out and could not hurt a fly! A police officer in Boston (or many) is trying to make big bucks by selling this false story to the TV stations. What else is new?? Philip is an intelligent man who is just trying to live his life so if you could leave us alone we would greatly appreciate it. We expect to marry in August and share a wonderful, meaningful life together."
However other friends are reeling from the news: One, who said Markoff had been to his apartment for parties, told Good Morning America, "I like to think I'm a good judge of character, hang out with people who are similar to myself. Didn't suspect anything like that." And a former friend tells the Post, "[Markoff] was kind of a creep -- he gave off a creepy vibe. A female friend also felt like he was creepy."

I have to say this about surveillance cameras, they are getting better.
IMO, outing the fiance is a mistake. Even if he is guilty as sin, she isn't.
I think ABC News and Gothamist should keep that in mind.
She emailed ABC.. and they had public websites about their pending marriage. In short, she outed herself.
Maybe, but other news sites like the Daily News reported her comments without ID'ing her by name.
If he did these things, she's a victim of that guy too. She was planing her wedding, all starry eyed, and now she's living a nightmare.
IMO, Sites should keep that in mind as this is undoubtedly one of the worst days of her life and it will only get worse.
Its news-- he killed someone, she was engaged to him. She's not a minor. No protected status. Such is life. And she can now turn the lemon into lemonade should she choose to. She got out before she had 3 kids with a psychopath serial killer. I say lemondade.
He was such a good kid.
Quiet, kept to himself.
A pillar of the community.
Used to wave to us from his porch.
My son is a good boy!!!
This guy is so Paul Bernardo.
If the girlfriend wants to sound off like that publicly, she should be brought into the light of day for a serious look. She is attempting to contaminmate the Jury pool. If she wants to demure, then allow her privacy, but she is taking an active role. Its fair to hammer her.
Such a clean-cut, pleasant face. You never know!!! Yikes!!!
never trust whitey, especially the clean-cut ones.
Hey, go ahead and put his name and picture up. Richard Jewel must be spinning in his grave.
In terms of the fiance, my thinking too...
You're right, TimSPC; it's important to keep what you're saying in mind. I'm afraid this is just the way we live now, sadly.
Except unlike Jewell, they actually have evidence this time. They've linked the IP addresses of his Craigslist emails to his physical location, oh and they have pictures of him.
You're right, prosecutions undertaken by the state on behalf of the public should always be conducted in secret, with the results announced only after an acceptable verdict (and sentence!) has been reached.
The last things you would want are secret trials and/or muzzling the press.
Was my comment really not far enough over the top?
Was my comment really not far enough over the top?
for a med student he's pretty stupid.
There is no justification for comparing this guy's situation to Richard Jewell. If he is spinning in his grave its because of THAT particular insult!
The fiance's in some serious denial. I feel bad for her.
By now she looking at that Macy's registry and wondering about the 13 knives that he insisted on...
lol most girls who married losers don't think they are marrying one. they never see beyond the superficial. years later down the road they are totally blind sided when the truth comes out.
good thing for her is he is shown in a different light, but she believes it or not is her problem.
I'd be pissed if I were her dad, paying for the wedding and shit..
Nah, its 4 months away. You just lose your deposit-- not cheap but only 10-20%, so you get to save 80% or so.
And potentially your daughter's life.
Hats off to the Boston Police for a fast arrest in this case.
I don't get it. Why was he robbing these women? I don't think people who have money would lower themselves to offering these kinds of services on Craigslist. Why not go where the money is -- banks, liquor stores, etc.?
The same reason why most serial killers murder prostitutes. They are a nonentity. They won't be missed, probably have no families, and the law most likely won't care that they're gone. Those women who offer those services wouldn't go to the cops if they were rob because they'll probably incriminate themselves for offering said services.
The fact remains that women desperate enough to stoop to these actions probably have no money. They're not worth robbing. It would take a lot of robberies to get the money he needs and each robbery raises the risk of capture.
"The fact remains that women desperate enough to stoop to these actions probably have no money. They're not worth robbing"
But, if he's not her first appointment, he can count on there being at least a few hundred dollars in cash somewhere in that room.
BTW "police suspect Markoff may have been robbing—and resorting to violence—to pay off gambling debts."
seriously, he should have been going after Bernie Madoff's wife. she got the bucks you need!
I have a bad feeling that the next round of joke-variations will read:
"Scott Peterson, OJ, and Phil Markoff were riding in an airplane when..."
Regardless of all else, I hope they got the right guy for all the obvious reasons. If so, well done BPD. As for his fiance, I can't think of a more humane way for her to learn how naive and gullible she is for the wrong guy.
I feel that after hearing this that every women should protect themselves. If you need anything you should look up my website at survivaljungles.blogspot.com and it will help every women out there.
the victim was shot three times, No one heard gunshots at the hotel????
gunshots indoors is quite loud and in a hotel where walls are so thin one can hear everything that goes on in the next room. where are the witnesses?
You know, that's funny.
I've had lots of women swear up and down to me that 'hotels have thin walls' and they could hear everything that other couples were doing in the next room.
But my male ears have never been able to hear a damned thing through those walls.
Maybe it's a gender thing - probably every woman in that hotel said "what was that noise !!!???!!!"
And the guys all rolled over, said "What noise? What are you talkin' about, baby? You're hearing things! Come on, come back to bed!" and that was that.
Is it just me, or does this guy totally look like Mister Boston from "I Love New York"?
Shit is deep!
