Pot Law Reformers See Progress on Ending Prohibition

042009dude.jpg It's 4/20, brah, that happy day when burnouts across America reinforce the cliched stereotype of pot smokers as badly dressed, self-righteous libertines. But it's also the day when the more politically active puffers out there try to rally support for legalization, and this year some of the movement's leaders are reporting unprecedented progress in the battle to end prohibition. Public support has been voiced by everyone from Representative Barney Frank to demagogue Glenn Beck; and Bruce Mirken at the Marijuana Policy Project tells the Times, "We’ve been on national cable news more in the first three months than we typically are in an entire year. And any time you’ve got Glenn Beck and Barney Frank agreeing on something, it’s either a sign that change is impending or that the end times are here." NORML says donations to the group have surged recently, and they're using the momentum to pressure President Obama with a new commercial. Locally, 4/20 will be observed tonight at Studio B, where High Times magazine throws its annual party that promises to "turn the Big Apple into the Baked Apple."

    Legalize it.

  • Qraymond

I had a really important comment to make but now I can't remember what it was.

  • The Family Guy weed song last night was hilarious!

  • JacqueMehoff

    a bag of weed,

everything goes better with a bag of weed.

all we need is a bag of weed.

  • Is it on Hulu???

  • Wza

4:20 is a west coast thang..

  • NannyState

I was gonna vote for it in the referrendum, but I was too busy doing 'shotguns' with the cat.

  • alivefromnewyork

Cypress Hill is at the Fillmore in San Fran today.

  • So, burning Tobacco and inhaling the smoke and ashes is bad, but doing the same for Marijuana is good??

    I'm so confused...

In any case, What does Legalization mean exactly? You can sit on your steps and smoke it as long as it is in a Paper Bag???

  • jaycjay

Huh? Yes, you are confused if somehow in the argument in favor of legalizing marijuana you are hearing a statement that "tobacco is bad."

Tobacco is legal. It likely will always be. Its sale also generates millions in tax revenue for various government jurisdictions, as the sale of marijuana could if it were similarly legal and regulated.

As to what legalization would mean, that Of Course (seems like there's some reason for some random words to be capitalized, so there you go) would depend on what laws regardless marijuana were put in place. That debate has Barely Begun.

  • So, Again, What does Legalization mean exactly? What dO yOu want it to bE?

Happy? Better Caps for you? Now, if your done nitpicking, could you specifically answer the question? With examples? Give it a shot.

Personally, I don't see it being legalized as it affects everyone in the area (unlike alcoholic drinks). I am curious as to what legalizing means to people.

I'll even be careful about my use of capital letters, just to play nice.

  • jaycjay

"What dO yOu want it to bE?"

I never said I favored legalization. I was just expressing my opposition to straw man arguments and misdirection.

  • Politburo

Legalization would ideally result in a system very similar to what is currently used for alcohol and tobacco regulation. That would mean ID checks when purchasing, no public use, not sold in grocery/corner stores, no advertising.

  • Fair enough but what about smoking in an apartment complex, as an example?

A private detached house is one thing, but common ventilation would affect anyone in range. Unlike alcoholic beverages, anyone breathing it gets affected, including any minors/small children.

Along the same vein, should we legalize Nitrous Oxide too?

    (Bad use of caps??)

  • hotstepper

    what is your major malfunction?

    legalization: marijuana = tobacco.

  • Seem similar to me in some respects. You roll leaves from either plant into a burnable paper holder and light it up and inhale that ashes and smoke.

While both are a bad idea, IMO, the difference is that tobacco will not immediately impair the judgment/reflexes/etc of everyone in the area.

O, BTW, you should capitalize the "W" in "what is your major malfunction?".

    It's a tough crowd here...

  • hotstepper

i applaud your attempts to master the obvious.

  • There you go with the caps again...

Better watch out, the Grammar Police will get you!

So, are you for legalizing it and if so, in what way?

That is, like tobacco or alcohol? Or something new altogether?

I'd certainly hate to assume anything on your terse behalf.

  • oops, I meant "if you're done nitpicking"...

(A vain attempt to ward off the Gramer Police)

    Doh! Caps again!

  • whantmoore

If you are going to legalize gay marriage and not weed which will stimulate the economy you are a dumb ass

  • breaknight

I feel like a nerd, but can somebody explain to me the significance of 4:20? Why is it associated with pot?

  • Yeah ! And you'll reduce the chance of being Shot on the A train. Oh, They don't take the Train.
