Free Yankees Tickets + People = Chaos

2009_04_yankfan.jpg When you've got free Yankees tickets and you're handing them out in Times Square, it's only fair to expect a mess, right? The Daily News and Post report that Pepsi's giveaway of Yankees tickets was short-lived: The News lists mistakes like not having the "promised" opening day tickets (most were for June), not letting people meet Goose Gossage (he only waved) and changing locations, "forcing fans who had staked out spots to make a mad dash across Times Square." According to the Post, those gathered started yelling "Pepsi sucks! Pepsi sucks!" and "cracked open cans of the soft drink and poured it onto the pile of swag, sending cops racing to the scene." Pepsi said, "All we wanted to do was make fans part of the celebration, giving away free Yankee tickets and Pepsi-Cola products, but we blew it. The wrong information got out about the tickets being offered and we didn't have the right permits to distribute them. Although we eventually gave away more than 200 free tickets, some particularly passionate fans got angry with us, and we don't blame them. We're very sorry for upsetting or inconveniencing anyone."

200 tickets? In a city of 10,000,000 people they have a supply of 200 tickets..? Somebody really fugged up..

Hey, the tickets at the new stadium are PRICEY! These are tough times after all. In the end they could have given out 2 tickets and the same exact things would have happened and they still would have gotten the same coverage. I'm sure the people collecting their tickets for the pepsi corporate box didn't have to deal with any "wrong information getting out".

Pepsi really does suck........ It figures that they would be partnered with the Yankees. Match made in heaven.

Coca-Cola would never have let this happen...

  • Rocknrope

    PR FAIL.

Sounds like a Celebrity Apprentice task.

    Yankee fans....

  • jaycjay

Likely a large number of them really weren't Yankee fans, but just people who like free stuff. Half of those tickets are probably already being offered on craigslist and ebay.

  • Steven

Yep. Exactly. Plenty of people have "jobs" of searching the Internet for all kids of freebie or cheap items and then going on craigslist or ebay trying to resell them for a profit.

There was a family on Wife Swap last week whose 'hobby' is 'sweeping'. Entering as many sweepstakes as possible.

They have their kids go through trash to find bottle caps, and the husband wakes up at 3 am to enter contests on the Internet (he claims his chances are better at 3 am since no one else is up)

[Yes, I watch Wife Swap. Not only is it hilarious, it's a guide for how not to live, since only crazy families are allowed on.]

They had a mob situation," said Mai Jiang, 31, of Manhattan. "It was horrible. Nobody wants to drink Pepsi anymore."

    Hilarious.

  • ChampionOfTheSun

I don't watch often, but it's probably the funniest show on TV.

Anyway, Coke and the Mets are better. Just ask the 1986 Mets.

Yeah I have never really encountered a marauding pack of asshole Yankee fans in this town before. Must be some internet nerds acting out.
