Passover's So Over, So Bagels Are Back, Bubby!

041709bagel.jpg Passover ended last night at sundown, so it's party time for observant Jews; that means plenty of pizza, pasta, and bagels, among other yeasty items they've denied themselves for the past eight days, in remembrance of the exodus from Egypt. According to the Times, today's the biggest day of the year for many local bagel makers, some of whom simply close shop during Passover, when leavened products are eschewed by Jews. But the article oddly spotlights Terrace Bagels, which the paper of record misidentifies as a "Park Slope" eatery. Terrace Bagels is in Windsor Terrace, a neighborhood not exactly known as a big Jewish community. So it's no wonder the manager there only observed a "slight drop" in sales during Passover, which he attributes "more to people going away for vacation because school is out." On the Upper West Side, of course, it's a different story; the 72nd Street Bagel shop owner says he usually does "one and a half times" the usual business today. His staff has been up since 4:30 a.m., and by the time you read this, they're probably already out of everything bagels.

I went to Bagel Smith on Bedford this morning. I got my everything bagel just fine.

To the New York Times, there are only a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Park Slope is one of them.

Honestly. Haven't they ever heard of Bergen Bagels?

I live about 2 block away from Terrace Bagels. Terrace Bagels is on Prospect Park West (that's the name of the street). PPW is the dividing line between Windsor Terrace and Park Slope/South Slope. Terrace Bagels is on the Slope-side of the street, not the Windsor Terrace side, so technically the NYTimes article is correct.

I lived in Windsor Terrace on 16th Street for five years. Not only does nobody consider Terrace Bagels to be in Park Slope, but everyone I know marks the end of Park Slope at 15th Street. Of course, real estate brokers have been trying to extend it further south for years.

According to the to the city of New York neighborhood map, I am technically correct.

H&H on 80th and Broadway has the best everything bagels.

So true. Their bagel factory is at the end of my street. mmmmmmmm m!

the best bagels are - gasp! - in jersey.
