Hipster Grifter: Day 3

Where in the world is Kari Ferrell? All signs point to her still living in New York, being spotted in Greenpoint, DUMBO and even at Williamsburg's Barcade. And now her victims, and Kari herself, are speaking out... the latter with much more brevity.

With her life story and photos saturating the internet, she wrote in to Gawker like the perfect self-handled PR puppet that she is, saying, "I am very sorry for everything I have done, and cannot— and will not—make any bloviated excuses for my actions." She also declares that she hasn't been up to her no-good tricks in years, something her "victims" would disagree with.

One recent would-be victim, a recent transplant who was looking for love on Craigslist only to land himself in Miss Ferrell's Crown Heights apartment, has now come out with his tale. It's a long one, with nothing really telling aside from her angling to get cash from him to pay her rent, before the two even met. Otherwise, he makes several declarations that he's not attracted to her nor her "cherubic frame," however, he did make out with her and probably would have gone further had she not told him she wanted to take things slow. Odd coming from someone who passes along sexually aggressive notes to strangers.

Others who have encountered Miss Ferrell, an old roommate and a former friend, both note her inability to be a good con artist, and her attempts at getting money out of their circle of friends. In the end, though, they were luckily only witness to her skipping out on paying for cabs and food deliveries. Not quite the fraud, theft, and $60,000 in bad checks she's wanted for in Utah.

Finally, there's her Salt Lake City bail-bond agent who talks to the Observer about a year-long web of lies she's weaved, and declared: “I’d smack the shit out of Kari if she came by.” What does the NYPD have to say about all of this nonsense? They told one tipster “Call us when she kills somebody.”

I don't know anything about this story, nor do I want to take the time to look into it (I'm in San Francisco). But this is the story about that woman who handcuffed George Costanza to the hotel bed and stole his suit, the woman he met on the subway? That's old news.

  • chuzzlewit

jen, you know it comes back threefold, right? have fun!

another victim of the current economy.

f*ck it. i can't get enough of this horse sh*t. Hit me up Kari. We'll make an alt. porn in the vein of Burning Angels loosely based on the Legend of Billy Jean, call it Legendary Sexploits of a "Hipster Grifter" or some sh*t. Then you go to jail, we start hyping The Further Legendary Sexploits of a "Hipster Grifter." Maybe a prison themed thing, lots of girl on girl and bondage. Then we'll round out the Hipster Grifter porn trilogy with the post prison story, maybe a return of the jedi/boys n the hood theme. you can bang a bunch of midgets in ewok costumes then get shot in a drive by on speeder bikes. Cube blows up the death star, End. I know its rough, but i have 3 writer on it right now, it should be boffo.

"It's an interesting story. If it weren't, it wouldn't garner any feedback, positive or negative."

It is an interesting story, but what's more interesting to me than the details about her or whatever she did is the propagation of the story, the reactions, and the motivations of the people involved in keeping the story alive.

About five or six years ago I met a woman, and dated her for a while. Nothing "hipster" about her, she was older than me by a couple of years, always dressed up, and seemed very cool, caring, and cute.

But she did have seven cats. Maybe that should have been a clue.

So eventually it became clear that she was more needy and manipulative than it first had appeared. She'd call too much, and always wanted to know where I was and what I was doing. She was often upset because she was being put upon by someone. She asked me for money a couple of times for things like a vet bill, a prescription, and to help cover rent. She was working temp jobs and not making a steady income. I learned, from her, that she was also borrowing money from a former neighbor of hers, and it was clear when I met him that his major crush on her was he would agree to do it.

In time I decided that her manipulative behavior and deception (nothing major, I just couldn't really believe little things she'd say, and it became clear that she'd casually lie about at least minor points to anyone) weren't worth my time. So I ditched her, said OK this isn't working and moved on. It was kind of depressing, because I did miss the fun times I'd been having with her. But whatever... I continued meeting other people and having other fun times. Big deal.

What did I not do? I didn't post every details of this on widely-read blogs, I didn't make sure everyone knew her name and where she lived, I didn't post photos of her and emails that she'd sent me, and whine about how I'd been treated. Gee, could be that I am an adult?

To everyone who has known Kari Ferrell: grow the hell up.

I'm sorry, but this is just too high school for me. If I wanted to hear about this kind of shit I would be watching gossip girl right now and texting my mean friends about who got fat.

Seriously, this woman's sex-life is no one's business. And the criminal aspect of the story is pretty dull compared to the horrible things happening in the rest of the city on any given day.

Now if she busts out a machete, that might be news.

If it were you wouldn't have bothered to read and comment on it.

I try and read everything posted on Gothamist because it's a great site. But sometimes it veers into this catty gossip mode that is very unappealing. What's the point of having a comments section if it's not used?

  • ChampionOfTheSun

Perhaps she's a hipster grifter fister, or a hipster grifter nipple twister, and someone is just sore over the whole thing.

Either way, this is the only type of story I'd read about if I was bored to death at work. And I imagine 99% of gothamist readers are bored to death at work. The other 1% are probably bored to death in white collar prison.

  • hotstepper

    when did Gothamist become Gossipist?

  • jaycjay

"Not quite the fraud, theft, and $60,000 in bad checks she's wanted for in Utah."

That inaccurate number keeps getting passed on by the clueless. The Utah information does not say she passed $60,000 in bad checks. It says her warrants total $60,000... that is the amount of bail it would take to clear them.

For example, the bail bondsman who spoke to the Observer is on the hook for $5,000 for the attempted Western Union fraud, but the amount that allegedly (because let's not forget she hasn't been convicted of this) was involved could have been just a few hundred dollars. Regardless of the amount, that would be a felony charge.
