Separated At Birth? Federal Reserve And Yankee Stadium

With the opening day just moments away, it's time to look at the new Yankee Stadium's striking resemblance to another building. Yes, the new House That Jeter (And Lots of Money, Much In Tax-Free Bonds) Built looks a lot like the Federal Reserve's headquarters in D.C.—the Eccles building was designed in 1935, by Paul Philippe Cret (it was considered a "a daringly modernist interpretation of the Beaux-Arts style and has become a noted part of American architectural history," according to the Fed).

Two weeks ago, the NY Times' architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff wrote that the new Yankee Stadium "is the kind of stoic, self-conscious monument to history that befits the most successful franchise in American sports" and is "straightforward, paint-by-numbers architecture." Either way, George Steinbrenner will be there, according to Newsday. Jesse Jackson, who saw the stadium earlier this month, "It's done in true George Steinbrenner style. It's first-class, over-the-top, no concern for expense and bust through the budget for comfort."

MLB.com is offering free streaming video of Yankee Stadium's unveiling. CC Sabathia is the starting pitcher against Cleveland's Cliff Lee.

BEAT TRIBE! GO YANKEES!

Many great institutions of this country use classical architecture to symbolize our cultural status and prestige. That is true of the Federal Reserve and other great buildings of our cities. Just as the Federal Reserve is a long standing institution of this country so is the new Yankee stadium. The style is indeed befitting!

And both are run by crooks and shysters, how appropriate.

Are either of these run by crooks or shysters?

If you find these all that similar, I think you have the architectural equivalent of color-blindness.

And also are easily confused by varying camera angles.

They both look really fucking dull... I sincerely hope the feds tear down that ancient building on the left in favor of a new state of the art facility. Maybe with a Shakedown Shack in the lobby?

I hate to Godwin the thread but the Eccles building's reinterpretation of the Beaux Art style into rigid, sharp-angled geometry was exactly the same style that the Nazis popularized all over Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich.

OK, that's harsh. That syle was rather popular back in the twenties and thirties. It's just that, like almost everything else, the Nazis carried it to an extreme.

I agree - it looks like Speer's stadium in Nuremberg. Awful and dehumanizing.

...Or the Reichs Air Ministry.

FYI -- MSNBC mentioned this post and Gothamist last night near the end of the Rachel Maddow show, when they did a short piece on the Yanks new stadium. They referred to the site as "The Gothamist".
