After rumors, the NY Times has confirmed that it will be cutting a few sections as part of its cost-saving measures. According to the Observer, "The City section, the regionals and the Escapes section will be eliminated as stand-alone sections in The Times. Instead, they'll just use material that may have appeared in those sections in a Sunday metro report." Times executive editor Bill Keller told employees, "We will consolidate Sunday Metro area coverage in a new Sunday feature section, which will be a showcase for news and features from the city and beyond. (Metro area breaking news will be incorporated into the A-book.)" Also, the Sunday Times Magazine will no longer have fashion spreads—they'll be going into the T magazine.

So much for one of the best feature sections the Times had.
RIP The City
What does this have to do with Susan Boyle?
Damn it, the City section was the most interesting one in the whole paper.
Fuckheads. They already eliminated the weekly metro section. Now no city section on tjhe weekend? WTF? Maybe they should just pack it in. It's not worth it to them to keep going.
I have a feeling that they just want to have one crappy national edition and sell it everywhere ditching all but the bare minimum of local content. If you have ever seen the worthless joke that is the national edition of the paper you know what I am talking about.
totally -their national and international coverage is so half-*ssed. there are, like, so many better places to find that depth and breadth of reporting.
Toby, you're absolutely right. They'll turn into another bland USA Today. Generic, trying to fit all tastes, but satisfying none.
The Sunday Edition has too much now.
eliminate the car section not the city section.
That's a shame about the City disappearing. The problem that many newspapers don't seem to acknowledge is, when you start cutting into your product, people have less incentive to buy it. It becomes a vicious cycle. The Times still has the greatest journalists in the country but it needs to be careful - it's a slippery slope when you start cutting sections.

For this newspaper to 'get back on track'-
the NYTimes has to stop it's bias and slanted reporting of the news events of the day.
They should use the voting booth, like everyone else- to advance their own political agenda. Also- it would be nice not to 'run-down' America to the rest of the World! In all of human history- AMERICA has always been a drivng force for good!
If they'd stop charging $4.00 for their Sunday edition, maybe more people would buy it. The Sunday Times has been getting skinnier by the week but the price keeps rising.
Now I can read the times in under an hour. Jerks.
I'm not crying over this-- I often found the City Section self-referential and cloying. But I'd rather see it improved than cut altogether.
