Boy Who Fell To Death Was Trying To Glide

2009_04_bkfal.jpg Police say that a 9-year-old who fell 13 stories was wearing a "parachute" made of a plastic bag at the time of his fall. Domori Miles was found in a lot near his building in Brooklyn's Albany Houses. According to WCBS 2, "Police said while his mother was running an errand, Domori used a large plastic bag tied to his arms. He then went to the roof using a door that had no alarm. He got over the fence and plunged to his death. "

It's suspected the boy was trying to imitate a move on the World Wrestling Entertainment video game, "Smackdown vs. Raw." The Post says he may "have been trying to perform the Swanton Bomb, a technique made famous by World Wrestling Entertainment superstar Jeff Hardy"—the mother of Domori's friend said, "Domori thought it was really cool. He thought he could fly."

Domori's older sister had been looking for him but had no idea where he went; a neighbor told the Daily News, "I was sitting inside and I heard a thump. I looked out my window and saw the boy on the ground. He was on his back and his clothes were ripped off." Neighbors are also upset that the door to the roof wasn't alarmed.

The makers of the video game issued a statement, noting, "In the video game Smackdown vs. Raw, which is rated T for Teens, none of the characters jump off buildings or use parachutes." The News also reports that a WWE spokesman said, "The death of Damori Miles is a tragedy and our condolences go out to his family. We should allow the authorities to conduct a full investigation... including insecure roof access, before conclusions are made about this unfortunate incident."

    Darwin was right-

Domori's absence from planet earth will only serve to improve the human gene pool...

  • nice job

jesus that's sad. that sounds like the sort of wacky experiment i would have done when i was nine. except i would have jumped out of a tree instead.

  • JenChungsBaby

Maybe he brought the bag for airsickness and just fell off his magic carpet.

  • schizofriendly

It's amazing I survived the fun, idiotic pshidt I attempted as a kid. Good thing too, or I wouldn't have lived to whittle away my days in the dreariness of an office job while simultaneously worrying about losing it.

The real question here should be why did the kid go to the roof to perform the Swanton? That move could just as easily have been done in the comfort of his bedroom from a ladder (or similar platform) onto his bed. Sounds to me like he was trying to get away from his family to do this. Maybe the parents knew this and wanted to deflect blame away from themselves by trying to place it elsewhere.

  • wobbleSmith

the kid was a special ed student. at least, that was stated in a news piece i read. sad story.

i truly hope this doesn't turn into some ridiculous lawsuit against the makers of a videogame. but it almost cetainly will.

the building owners are toast, as well. and rightfully so. no alarm or lock on the roof door? that's an open invitation to a litigious culture. to think what a simple sliding lock at eye-level could have prevented...

something is wrong here. when i was of that age, you couldn't pay me to get anywhere near the edge of a building, even if you gave me a real parachute and had a fire dept waiting for me with a huge mattress at the bottom.

  • A tragedy. R.I.P.

Video games are not at fault. Overall parental ethics are. In fact, our western society has become so PC and so self involved it seems no one will ever take any responsibility for their own actions. I understand the boy was 9, but at 9 I knew I couldn't fly, except in my dreams where I sometimes feel I can swim through the air, man those dreams are fun.

Back to the issue here, media cannot conceivably be blamed for every shortfall of human error. If I drive my car fast on a wet road and crash and hurt myself can I sue Ford for their commercials which are normally shot on wet roads? Can I sue United Artists for crafting fast car chases in the movie Ronin? The answer is no. I can't sue, because I knew better than to drive fast on a wet road. The parents of this child have an obligation to his life and his safety and they are responsible for his well being.

It's not enough to 'Believe you can fly'.

  • mossface

I'm pretty sure Jeff Hardy doesn't wear a parachute.

In all seriousness, it's a real tragedy, but even a 9 year old should know he can't fly, no matter what he watches or what video games he has. I played a lot of Altered Beast when I was younger but I wasn't running around trying to rise from my grave and save Zeus' daughter...

  • aveB4life

wise fwom your gwave! love altered beast!! sega genesis 4 life

  • Snoopy

What's the matter, you don't like Greek chicks?

  • JacqueMehoff

I just torrented that game for psp, it is kind of violent.

    duh.

got mlb 09 too, video games sure have changed since atari 2600.

  • BlackieJones

    Darwin got him early....

  • hotstepper

these darwin comments are so tired. you're talking about a dead child here. show some respect.

  • Politburo

Not only is it disrespectful, it's wrong. This tragic death is not a demonstration of any theory of Charles Darwin.

  • w0wzers

Darwin did his work, Who knows what stupid shit this would have done later on in his life. Yes a kid died, but still come on.There were definatly some screws loose to think you can glide with a plastic bag. I mean did he have GI joes, so he could have tested his plans before thinking it's a good idea to jump off a roof.

  • Spirit of 76

If Darwinism worked perfectly, guys like you would be sterile. I was wondering how long it would take for some jerk to post a "Darwin" comment.

  • imadick

    let's play "pass the buck!"

  • Armchair_warrior

a 9 year old should know better and plus the parent or someone should be watching. don't blame the building or games for this problem.

  • Huffy6241

You know, a guy tried this years ago in Paris - same result:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BepyTSzueno

And after the event, this guy's parents tried to sue some pigeons found in Paris claiming he was influenced by what he saw them do. "He thought they were cool. He thought he could fly."

  • nicemarmot

He thought he could fly? At 9 years old? I seriously hope this kid had some kind of learning disability or something, because otherwise that's idiotic even by small child standards.

  • Geoelh

Some of these comments... Jesus Christ, he's a kid, he's got an imagination, he hasn't got every advantage... Y'all need to try introspection for a change.

There's no good reason the roof door of any building shouldn't be locked.

  • datyou

I believe he was learning disabled.

  • Dirk

Right... so let's blame a video game.
