Archbishop Timothy Dolan Basks In New York Welcome

During the elaborate installation ceremonies yesterday, Archbishop Timothy Dolan said to the thousands gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral, "This cathedral has been such a warm, embracing, spiritual hall for so many millions. Thank you. Thank you all for embracing me." Dolan, replacing retiring Edward Cardinal Egan, is now the leader of the New York Archdiocese, which has 2.5 million in the NY area.

The services were full of pageantry; the NY Times described part of the proceedings, "With the choir in full throat and the organ at high pitch, the opening procession filled up a full hour: white-robed priests, followed by miter-topped bishops and sashed cardinals in red, marching solemnly in single file through the cathedral’s front doors on Fifth Avenue, as the smiling archbishop stood outside, greeting them nonstop." The Daily News pointed out Dolan's humorous side came through: He said, "I am really relieved to see mom. We were a little worried this morning that she might not make it. She found out there was a sale at Macy's."

However, Dolan also offered the strong opposition to abortion, "The resurrection goes on as his church continues to embrace and protect the dignity of every human person, the sanctity of human life, from the tiny baby in the womb." He also told reporters that he would fight Governor Paterson's same-sex marriage legislation.

How can a religion that uses the word "reborn" to indicate a person being saved from the finality of death, not understand that birth is the beginning of life?

He probably got boo'd by Knick fans who thought he was related to James Dolan.

But, he really should be boo'd for his archaic views on abortion and gay marriage.

champ this is our beliefs go bother the jews who want the jets to change their football schedule because its on a jewish holiday

They should have filmed it for an episode of "RuPaul's Drag Race!"

Wheres the photo and/ or video (it was shown live on all the local media outlets) of Bloomberg, Paterson, Schumer and Gillbrand awkwardly standing up but without applause, for the pro-life statement during the homily.

The look on their faces was PRICELESS, wouldve been better if the 4 of them were the only people sitting while the entire church gave a standing ovation!!!

Oh Gothamist, nice of you to mention this too!!!

this dude is worse than egan cuase he's so roly poly jovial and inviting when he's got even worse conservative views. He also has a nazi stance on catholicism. He says you must go to church or you ain't a real christian.

Of course he does. If Christians stayed at home and worshipped, they wouldn't pour money into the churches.

Any idea why the media went all ga-ga over this?
Is it that most people view the Roman Catholics as some sort of mysterious and secretive organization like the Freemasons? Really. It isn't like they have a women running things like say the Episcopal Church.
