Archbishop Timothy Dolan's Installation Begins Tonight

2009_04_tdolan.jpg Around 6 p.m., if you see a man of the cloth (followed by the press) knocking on the doors of St. Patrick's Cathedral, don't be alarmed—it'll just be the new leader of the New York Archdiocese. Archbishop Timothy Dolan will be symbolically asking New York's Roman Catholic community to accept him.

While there are the Solemn Vespers tonight (6 p.m.-9:30 p.m.), Dolan will be officially installed tomorrow in elaborate ceremonies (beginning 1:30 p.m.) that will be covered by the local news stations—as well as their online counterparts. You can download the prayerbook here (PDF). WCBS 2 reports that the 59-year-old invited a second-grader who shares the same name to the event tomorrow. Apparently little Timothy Dolan of the Bronx sent him a letter, "Dear Archbishop Dolan: Would you like to meet each other one day?"

The police have announced street closures for Fifth Avenue and neighboring 50th and 51st Streets for tonight and tomorrow; some bus lines are also impacted (the M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 and Q32, plus express lines, are being rerouted/will skip the 50th Street stop, depending on the time of day). But after tomorrow, things will settle down—except in the Bronx and Queens (Dolan will be attending baseball games this week

Remember, only trust a trained professional when installing an Archbishop.

Which third grader will he be installing himself into?

That grown man with the funny clothes in the picture has an imaginary friend.

Who cares??? And WNBC is wasting all day tomorrow airing this shit live???

None of you are probably old enough to remember him, but he looks like Sam Levinson.

I'm torn, either I go to this or The Tax Day Tea Bag protest. that bible looks radioactive.

See religion still runs shit unfortunately, When are the old guards gonna die off already.

Catholic bashing! The only "hate" acceptable by educated, white liberals.

Oh don't you worry, not only do I think the Catholic Church is complete garbate, I feel the same way about Judaism and Islam too. They are all worthless shit.

I am mystified by all the attention this is getting. Does ANYBODY care?

Clearly you don't care - and that's fine - you don't have to. However, NYC has a very long history of Catholicism. Up until very recently Catholics made up a large part of that city's population. This being a blog about NYC, it is relevant, and should get attention. When I was a kid, Cardinal O'Connor was a key NYC figure, and would be on the news everyday. He'd be interviewed about and discuss many secular issues such as crime. The last cardinal was a wet blanket - this new one seems like the right guy at the right time.
