Philippe Petit Plans Midtown Wire Walk

0409ppetit.jpg Philippe Petit, friend of Gothamist and entertainer of the world, will perform another high wire walk in New York. His most famous one, of course, was in 1974 when he walked back and forth between the Twin Towers (documented in the Oscar-winning and vertigo-inducing documentary Man on Wire). CityRoom reports that "Petit says he will perform a high-wire walk this fall in Midtown Manhattan. It will be high, it will be long, and it will be outdoors in a very recognizable location that he does not want revealed quite yet—discussions are not final." The walk will be to raise awareness for literacy, and is part of a series of walks he'll be performing across the country.

In the meantime, Petit will host a benefit screening of Man on Wire (with a Q&A to follow) this Wednesday at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, where he holds an office and has been an artist in residence since 1982. Fun fact: he keeps a practice wire strung inside of Synod Hall and "his duties long included changing the light bulbs high in the chandeliers because the cathedral had no other way to do it."

That man is totally wired.

Did he really walk back AND forth between the twin towers? I thought it was just a one-way trip.

8 times for 45 minutes, including laying down on the cable. A cop called it wire dancing rather than wire walking.

It's gotta be the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. Seems like the perfect location. If you saw the movie, he totally lit up to see the plans for the Twin Towers so symmetricalr. This looks pretty darned similar.

I think that you nailed it. That's definitely the best spot. Twin towers and lot's of room below for the crowds to gather. And, as opposed to the WTC, if he falls (God Forbid!) he wouldn't hurt anyone else so the authorities should be fine with that.

isn't that area known for being extra windy? would that affect his decision?

I think if you get up high enough it's gonna be windy anywhere in the city...either way, i can't imagine anything being as windy as the top of the WTC, so I'm sure he'll be fine :)

What about across Times Square? While it will be turned into a pedestrian mall?

Blaine only wishes he were this talented and brave. He's probably sitting in his apartment trying to see how long he can sit on a block of ice encased in a wooden box while holding his breath and not eating for a couple of days.
