Bloomberg-Supported Anti-Gun Ad Unveiled In Virginia

Never one to shy away from an anti-gun message—especially in a state that once had a "Bloomberg Gun Giveaway"—Mayor Bloomberg was in Virginia to unveil a TV commercial aimed at closing a loophole in the state's gun law that allows gun sales without background at gun shows. And with him were relatives of Virginia Tech shooting victims as well as the mother of NYPD cop Russel Timoshenko, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop. Here's the ad from Americans United For Safe Streets, a political action committee almost entirely funded by Bloomberg, which features the brother of a victim:

The ad calls out Republican gubernatorial hopeful and former Virginia AG Robert McDonnell, who, the Washington Post reports, "hasn't supported closing the loophole." CityRoom says the McDonnell's campaign considers it an "attack" but wouldn't mention the billionaire by name. (CityRoom also notices that McDonnell's website has a video of Rudy Giuliani referring to McDonnell as having "the kind of leadership that we need, not only in Virginia, but we need it throughout the country.") McDonnell's campaign manager said, "Bob McDonnell was on the campus of Virginia Tech the day after the shootings. He personally met with a number of families and friends of the injured and killed. He will never forget their suffering, and their pain."

Tatyana Timoshenko said, "I am standing in solidarity with the Virginia Tech families whose lives were also devastated by gun violence. My son was killed with a gun purchased from a Virginia gun store with a troubled history. To prevent future tragedies, I want to see the gun show loophole closed in Virginia and across the country."

What is this "loophole"? Background check or not it is a Federal felony to purchase a handgun from outside your home state. I.E. as a New Yorker I would be a felon if I even tried to purchase a handgun in VA or even NJ from anyone for any reason whatsoever. If you already don't care about being a felon you probably won't care how you get the gun regardless.

How about having the ATF monitor these gun shows for that? It would be the easiest case to make against gun trafficers.

Also, doesn't the mayor have more important things to do than trying to run another state? He isn't king of the world and I am sick of him sending our officers to PA and VA for nonsense. In case he needs reminding, his police powers end at the river.

What doesn't make sense is the faulty logic behind "My son was killed by a gun from a store, so let's close the loophole regarding gun shows." Is there anyone on either side of the gun debate that can actually form a good argument? Jeez!

And you're right, NRA4LIFE, Bloomberg needs to keep his nose out of other states' business before he starts another civil war.

ha! good luck.
VA has a pretty strong and active RKBA organization.
unless bloomberg is going to buy their entire legislature.
like how he paid for this entire ad campaign.

What worries me about background checks, is that once they are in place, they can be abused. Obviously the intention is preventing a person with a past criminal record to buy weapons. But who's next? What if an FBI profile shows up after a background check saying a person was politically active within a controversial group? Then they'll stop you from buying guns if you're not "patriotic." Then only government employees will be able to buy buns. etc etc

First they came for the communists...

NRA Members and gun "enthusiasts" are freaks. Dangerous freaks.

It's pretty simple: Bloomberg is NOT trying to stop Virginians from buying all the guns they want. He is trying to stop criminals from buying guns at gun shows where the dealers do not do any background checks. Currently, people are buying guns without ID. I can't get on a commercial flight nor enter a lot of buildings without ID.
The only people who need this are criminals and the legally insane who can't get a gun from a licensed Virginia gun store.
