Machete Arrest in Williamsburg

phpWUR4D7PM.jpg This morning we received an email regarding another machete incident in South Williamsburg. The tipster wrote: "I witnessed a young man in handcuffs being pulled out the bodega near the corner of South 4th and Bedford at about 9:45 last night, the bodega next to Papa Lima sandwich shop. After he was placed into a police van, a police officer walked out of the bodega holding a machete.

"I heard from some people in the neighborhood that some machete-wielding kids ran into the bodega and raised hell. Ambulances arrived on the scene and EMT's were directed towards the corner of South 3rd and Bedford, where a small crowd was gathered."

This corner seems to be particularly troublesome; just last month there was a pipe fight and an incident where a kid was caned at the pizza joint across the street.

We talked to an employee at the bodega this afternoon, who confirmed that there was indeed a machete arrest there last night, but since he wasn't there at the time, all he could tell us was that he heard it was "crazy" and that "everyone's been talking about it today." The 90th Precinct also confirmed that one person was arrested during the incident last night, and was still being held today. Though the officer we spoke to couldn't confirm it, he did say it was possible it was gang related, and that the police presence on that corner would likely be increased. Sigh, machete season is upon us yet again.

Um, South Williamsburg = south of the bridge where tha Hasidim live.

This area is the "South Side" subneighborhood of Williamsburg. Come on, Gothamist. You are the worst at knowing anything about where neighborhoods are sometimes... But it fills the huge void in my life to leave pedantic comments about neighborhood boundaries.

You're worse than that other guy who exists only to make this same comment, which is as FALSE as it is smug. South Williamsburg begins when the numbered streets, you know, turn into "south" streets after Grand. Why even the paper of record knows that: "South Williamsburg, the part of the neighborhood below Grand Street..."

Okay, fine, I stand corrected. The truth is I'm just lonely and compensate by creating an inflated sense of self-worth out of nitpicking blog posts. Oh well, time to masturbate gloomily again!

That's kind of a new usage, though. To lifelong North Brooklyners, when the streets turn to "south" streets after Grand, it's the South Side. The "north" streets are the North Side. Even twenty-somethings who grew up there or nearby will use those terms; calling it "South Williamsburg" started with the area's real estate boom and is used by newcomers -- and real estate people (like the Times' real estate reporter).

Personally I don't care which people use, I'm just tossing out a history lesson.

Not to beat a dead horse or anything...I live a block away from where this incident took place and have for several years. It's considered by locals at least the Southside of Williamsburg. But mostly we just call it Williamsburg.

Wrong.

Williamsburg = from the Water to the BQE and from the Bridge to the Park.

I'm willing to bet you dont stray more than 3 blocks from SEA and Planet Thai, do you John?

Actually, I live right by this place. And if the internet was around in the '80s, I'm sure these are the kinds of comments we'd get every time we used the word Tribeca.

My girlfriend lived at South 3rd & Bedford for over a year on the ground floor. One night at 4am we were sleeping until we were woken up by several gunshots. I was freaked out but was happy no stray bullets made it in our direction (I slept right next to the window) and managed to fall back asleep.

As I left the next morning, there was the whole official crime scene, but I believe the dead body was already removed. Since me and cops don't get along and they were trying to not make a big scene, I kept walking and then got freaked out again that a guy was murdered 20 feet from where I had been sleeping.

Since I never heard or read anything about it, I figured it was "just another" gang shooting, which made me feel better that it probably wasn't random, but obviously there are some serious problems on Bedford below Metropolitan and Grand. Shady characters were always gathered at all hours at that corner and at South 4th, but they were surprisingly not hostile either to me the white guy, or my girlfriend who by being female is target for harassment by large groups of thug-like men. I guess I'm thankful they looked shadier than they acted towards us, but none of this continued violence surprises me.

I'm hardly battle-hardened, as I know Williamsburg is for the most part gentrified, but I think I can also say I've seen my fair share of lame shit in neighborhoods that otherwise aren't too known for it. Shape up "South" Williamsburg!

Williamsburg = the river to Flushing Ave, north to McCarren Park.

Wikipedia sez:

"South Williamsburg" refers to the area which today is occupied mainly by the Yiddish-speaking Hasidim (predominantly those of the Satmar sect) and a considerable Puerto Rican population. North of this area (with Broadway serving as a dividing line) is an area known as "the South Side," occupied by Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. To the north of that is an area known as "the North Side," traditionally Polish and Italian, but now home to an increasing numbers of newcomers. East Williamsburg is home to many industrial spaces and forms the largely Italian American, African American, and Hispanic area between Williamsburg and Bushwick. South Williamsburg, the South Side, the North Side, Greenpoint and East Williamsburg all form Brooklyn Community Board 1. The "hipster" center of Williamsburg radiates from the strip of Bedford Avenue near the Bedford Avenue Station on the BMT Canarsie Line (L), the first stop from Manhattan. This area of which is sought out by recently arrived residents to New York City now includes north, south, and east Williamsburg. The "Northside" being the most expensive and most developed followed by the "South Side" and lastly "East Williamsburg".

Williamsburg = everything between Flusing Ave and the River, down to the Navy Yard, up to McCarran Park.

I can safely say anyone simply carrying a machete here in my neighborhood (central/east of Kellogs coupld blocks south of Metropolitan) will be taken care of by all the old Italian guys who are up all night watching over things.

Fuckin' Williamsburg tipsters...I mean, hipsters.

Okay nerds, you've got a bunch of little terrorists hacking and slicing your neighbors with machetes and you are more concerned about the what to call that shithole?
