A day after the NYPD distributed the cellphone picture of a man accused of sexually assaulting a subway passenger, cops have arrested him—thanks to a woman who recognized him from the photo.
The Post reports that Kevin Johnson, 30, was "selling swipes on a MetroCard at the Bay Parkway station of the N line in Brooklyn when he got into an argument with a woman he eyed as a customer." The argument escalated to the point of him yelling "profanities as he chased her out of the station." According to the Daily News, "The woman ran, and, believing Johnson was the man pictured in the news for sexual abuse, called 911. That's when NYPD Transit cops busted Johnson outside of the train station." And not only that, Johnson was wearing the same clothes he was pictured in during the Monday W train incident.
Charges are pending against Johnson, who has over 30 previous arrests (including sexual abuse, robbery, assault and theft). The woman who took the cellphone picture of Johnson, Simona Pirvutu, told the News, "I'm happy they caught him," and added, "I think every woman should do the same thing, given the circumstances. It's a very difficult position to be in. There's no way to prepare yourself for it. But you have to be prepared." As for the incident, she said, "I felt threatened and violated for a few seconds. It wasn't very pleasant... I'm proud of myself, but I was very scared."
NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne told the Post, "The woman who took this picture performed a fabulous public service. She provided a great public service when you see his record."

A great public service will only make her a target of retaliation when he gets out on bail later this afternoon. Too bad she couldn't have pushed him in front of the next train.
I wouldn't worry about this guy, he sounds like he couldn't find his ass with both hands, just someone else's.
I'm more concerned about the woman who dropped a dime on that Albanian. They don't mess around.
how is somebody with 30 arrests still out on the street?
You are racist.
good work team! now let's get this scum a new jumpsuit, cable t.v., and 3 square meals a day.
I know...
I hate the current system. First, all non-violent drug offenders should be freed. But for every other crime there should be no cable TV, no porn, no canteen, no weights, no basketball, and 2000 calorie/day meals.
The notion that soft conditions rehabilitate better than the alternatives is a stupid, liberal myth that has just as many people who have debunked.
Furthermore, it's common sense: jail should be no better than the real world. For the homeless anything, I guess, is an upgrade, but for all the lifers---it's too damn easy in there.
"The notion that soft conditions rehabilitate better than the alternatives is a stupid, liberal myth that has just as many people who have debunked."
Jail isn't cushy, you know. Have you ever been?
Yes, because the non-"soft" prisons of the past worked so well too! Prison is not a deterrent to crime. The death penalty is not a deterrent to crime. The only way to stop crime is rehabilitation, and permanent lock up for those who are unable to rehabilitate.
Prison and the death penalty are deterrents to crime.
However, they are not the only deterrents, and they will not deter all potential criminals.
Automatic castration will work nicely.
Yes, and that's why we no longer have crime!
And Edge: no it doesn't. Just ask Nazi Germany - they tried it and they realize that it doesn't do jack shit and they stopped doing it.
Are you aware that "deter" does not mean "completely prevent without any exception whatsoever"?
I'm pretty sure the death penalty stops all further criminal activity from those it is applied to. And the idea of prison deters me from engaging in violent activity, so I'd say that it's doing its job as a deterrent.
well, harsh conditions is all fine and good in theory until you are a jail warden or security guard. Since the government says you have to treat inmates like human beings you have to provide them a healthy sustaining environment. What you propose will zap them emotionally and mentally causing them to behave like wild monkeys. You ever see people in jail? they fucking work out all the time. If you took away their amenities they'd fucking go jiverly wong on everyone.
So the violent inmates would kill other violent inmates? Sounds good to me.
That's my station and there is usually a cop in attendance. I'm surprised it took so long to catch him. On second thought, I'm not so surprised. We're talking cops here.
2 days is hardly a long time to catch him
there's no good reason for this guy to be alive.
How much was he selling swipes for?
The going rate is $2.
What was the nature of the assault?
another modality of violence towards women: 30 arrests and he walks out to act on his perversions again.
MTA, Police... civilian population, who cares?
i don't think his 30 arrests involved only women, but whatever affirms your predetermined argument.
predetermined, as in relevant to the crime he was arrested for?
as in a continuance of your usual talking points.
The NYPD praises this photographer for performing a great public service, whilst harassing other photographers throughout the transit system for being picture-taking terrorists. Maybe I need to legitimize my work by having a sexual predator pose in all my subway photos.
over 30 previous arrests (including sexual abuse, robbery, assault and theft).
Did we work on wall street?
Our justice system is a laughing stock. Why is this guy on the streets!? The bigger question is how many of these guys are on the streets right now?
FUCK YEAH. Good for that chick. I once had a guy expose himself to me and my friends in front of a midtown Starbucks window (we were inside the Starbucks), which I shouldn't have to say made me throw up a little into my latte. After explaining to the employees what happened, they responded with, "Oh yeah, that guy. He does that all the time." They had notified the cops, but nothing ever came of it. Later I sincerely wished I had taken the guy's pic so I could get his ass thrown in jail. So to me, regardless of the guy's criminal status, it's still pretty awesome that woman retaliated by snapping a pic that resulted in his capture.
