Woody Allen Deems American Apparel "Sleazy"

0409aawa.jpg Last year Woody Allen filed a $10 million suit against American Apparel after they used his image (taken from Annie Hall) on their billboards in 2007, explaining at the time that he doesn't promote products in the U.S. This has now pit creepy underage-girl-loving Dov Charney against Allen, who clearly cannot relate to anything remotely, um, unconventional. He is calling the company, amongst other things, "sleazy, adolescent, and infantile," according to the NY Post. The tabloid also reports that yesterday American Apparel verbally retaliated "by demanding records showing whether his 'highly publicized sex scandal and custody battle' involving ex-girlfriend Mia Farrow and her adopted daughter Soon-Yi—Woody's current wife—had affected his earnings." Can there even be any winners in this case? (Besides Rupert Murdoch, of course.)

Isn't Woody Allen calling someone sleazy like Hitler calling someone an anti-semite?

No. The answer is no. It's not.

Um... yes it is.

"Pot... meet Kettle."

The fact that Allen continues to make movies and get top name stars to act in them tells us how much we've forgotten about ostracizing vile and deviant behavior.

Fatty Arbuckle is spinning in his grave. The man was born 70 years too early.

Ugh, the way I see it, these two supercilious oddities can keep wasting their energy bickering like tweens until they die. When it comes down to it, it's simply a matter of intellectual property. Hopefully the legal eagles can do their jobs efficiently so we can all go back to making an honest living without any more media coverage of this spat.

Why is this news?
Its his property, and they need his permission to use it.
End of story.

Unless Charney's legal team is able to convincingly argue parody (a la the case of Demi Moore v. advertising for Naked Gun 33 1/3).

Completely different cases. Naked Gun ad was an original work that was a parody of an existing work. This is simply copying an existing work.

this argument falls under one of the slightly less popular corollary's to the he who smelt it dealt it rule: it takes one to know one.

that being said - clearly a case of misappropriation of intellectual property and woody is fully within his rights to be filing suit.

I don't get this at all. They used his image without his consent. He sues them for what is clearly a violation of IP law and they respond by bringing up his personal life?

HUH???

Even if his earnings weren't affected by the *scandal* what does that have to do with their illegal use of his image?

That's how assholes argue. When you make a valid point, they respond with some irrelevant bullshit or personal attack to try and change the subject. If you pay attention, you'll see several posters here practice this tactic regularly.

When reached for comment, American Apparel CEO Dov Charney said: "Well, yeah. And Woody Allen is whiny."

Woody Allen should sue them again, and just put American Apparel out of business. What a horrible company and the merchandise sucks.

i meant he should kiss their ass. I don't ever see any of his movies. I saw matchpoint online, so that to give him a dime. fucking pedophile who use a child to betray her mother.

Woody Allen has no shame, he should their ass for posting his pedophile picture. Mia Farrow should sue him for money but she took the high road unlike this troll. He is the last person to judge anyone.

They've maybe upset his wife who went to Drew University, where former NJ Governor Keane was it's president. It was started by a once famous Methodist who had a well known tavern in New York City. Known as the "College in the Forest" in Madison, NJ it's very pretty. The Roebling Chapter of the Society for Industrial Archeology meets there every year. I once mapped its trees around Mead Hall and the archaeology of it after a fire. I was told it was the first place roses were cultivated in America. Good to have him back.
