TV Station Receives Letter, Photos From Binghamton Shooter

2009_04_letterb.jpg Yesterday, upstate news station News 10 in Syracuse that it received a package from Binghamton massacre gunman Jiverly Wong containing a rambling letter (it begins with "I am Jiverly Wong shooting the people"), his driver's license, and photos of himself posing with guns. The Daily News describes Wong's writing as a "litany of paranoid complaints" including claims that police were monitoring him, "touched him while he slept" and stole his wallet. Wong killed himself after fatally shooting 13 and wounding many others. NYU assistant professor of psychiatry Dr. Vatsal Thakkar tells the Post, "The letter sounds bizarre and has tones of persecution. And in his internal world, this violence might have been some sort of retaliation. Put these actions and the theme of the letter all together, and it could point to major mental illness, quite possibly paranoid schizophrenia." Why Wong decided to kill fellow immigrants who were learning English and staff at the American Civic Association is unclear, but the police are checking the Internet as well as victims' biographies to see if there are any further clues.

there should be a law against putting this crap on the airwaves. this type of posthumous fame is the carrot and stick for any self-serving psychopath ready to lock-n-load.

EXACTLY.

Whatever this azzwipe had to say should be kept restricted access to those who really need to know ..like police & court authorities. Then it should be used as toilet paper, preferably to wipe particularly obnoxious creamy defecation residues.

Funny, if I'd have gotten that packet I would have burned it, not aired it. Because by airing it you're giving the psycho murderer exactly what he wanted. Just like at Virginia Tech.

since when is You have a nice day a taunt?
he's polite that's for sure.
I think I will have a nice day, thank you.

this just a guy on his last straw, last of his support system gone, humiliated, probably loss of pride.
but why the civic center, mr. wong? no mention of that.

I wouldn't have burned it, but it certainly should be part of the police investigation.

Sounds like he read the Virginia Tech playbook and ran it step by step. Lucky that he didn't target the SUNY Binghamton campus, but I guess these lunatics target where they're familiar.

Another one for the Asian Hall of Shame.

This sounds like a classic case of PS. I remember back in college, my friends roommate kept saying black people were talking about him and we never heard it. Then one day, he's like "I got proof!". He brings out a tape recorder and presses play and all we hear is nothing and static and then he's like "you see! They are telling me to kill!" then me and my friend looked at each other, slowly backed away, and ran the fuck out of the room. Needless to say, the dude was put in an ambulance the next day and locked up in a mental facility. If you ever want to see what schizo life is about watch "Clean, shaven"

This whole story is so sad.

If anything positive comes out of it, I hope it'd be better understanding of mental illness and better ways to get to people who are so deeply troubled before they hurt someone.

After reading that sentence, I immediately thought of something Chris Rock said, "Whatever happened to just plain CRAZY?" Maybe there was no motive other than that he was out of his fucking mind.

I'm not trying to make anyone else responsible for Wong's actions, but in addition to being "just plain CRAZY" was there anything else that contributed to his taking out his craziness on other people.

It sounds like he had a lot of work/life problems that his craziness built upon. Maybe if we can find ways to help people with those sorts of problems, or at least let their families know that help exists, it could help prevent similar events.

"in addition to being "just plain CRAZY" was there anything else that contributed to his taking out his craziness on other people."

Clearly no one can really answer that, but if you read the letter to the end it seems he had some delusional reasoning that he had to take "at least two people with me... to return to the dust of the earth."

As incoherent as the whole thing is, it gets more so at the end so it's hard to follow what he was talking about with things like having to "get a judge job" and "make an impartial," then "already impartial now." By which I mean it's not clear to me that the terms "judge job" and "impartial" were actually the words he was looking for.

It's funny/sad how one of the shooter's big gripes was that he felt "degraded" by his own lack of English proficiency, then he goes and writes an almost cartoonish last letter full of laughable mistakes. I bet people DID make fun of him. He shouldn't have shot those people though. They weren't the ones degrading him.

how good's your vietnamese?

as long as the media keeps glorifying it, it will continue to happen.

Another great quote from Chris Rock: "Make bullets cost $500 each, and you'll have no more gun violence."

Pretty smart dude.

I'd argue that that's very dumb and indicates that Rock has ZERO knowledge of economics.

And zero knowledge of guns and the available consumer products for casting and reloading.

actually I never said cheap, I said "available" for all.
rich or poor, it's available.

It's comforting to know that if you ever really lose it and want the world to know about your paranoid schizophrenic delusions, all you have to do is mail an EPK to the media and go kill some people. This nation's media will make sure that your voice is heard and that your murderous rampage is not in vain.
Thank you NY Daily News, and every other news outlet who publishes this stuff. The victims of Columbine, Viginia Tech, and now Binghamton appreciate your giving a voice to the (homicidal) voiceless.

What this azzwipe could WRITE? "Me angry loooong time"

FUCK YOU and rot in hell Hop Sing.
