Thirty minutes lapsed between when Jiverly Wong entered the American Civic Association and shot numerous people and when the police entered the building. The Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin reports, "Broome County District Attorney Gerald Mollen said during a press conference Sunday that it was fair and natural to raise questions. But nothing police could have done would have saved the lives of the 13 people who died in Friday's massacre"—Mollen said that based on the autopsies, none of the victims could have been saved even if police managed to take them out immediately.
Wong's father was seen outside his home, where his son also lived. The Post reports, "[He] said nothing to explain his fiendish son's actions. Instead, he only hugged neighbors who came by to offer their support." Wong's sister was on the Today show and said her family was "very surprised" that her brother was the shooter; she said, "I can see that he was very depressed from losing his job and he was very frustrated with his English-speaking skills. He didn’t share any of his thoughts and feelings and he kept all of his frustration inside, and didn’t want to share with anybody else in the family.” She also said her family was very sorry for the victims and the families, "I am so sorry he acted in a terribly inappropriate way to his pressure."
Wong had attended English classes at the civic center—many of the victims were immigrants who were trying to work on their English so they could look for work or better socialize with people—but was apparently frustrated by the program. The Daily News points out that the gun store Gander Mountain where Wong purchased guns (though it's unclear if the guns used in the shooting were purchased there) was selling a special value pack of 100 bullets for $15.99.

At the very least, it's refreshing to NOT hear denials from the shooter's family. The common tendency is deny or blame something else (society, computer games, TV, ect..)
Also notice the absence of a parade heralding him as a hero. Refreshing news these days indeed.
Huh? Um, When a killer get a parade or get called a "Hero"???
Bernie is referring to the 60 idiots in Oakland that had a parade to celebrate the vile rat that killed four cops there.
when did a parade happen?
This is so sad. Why does the NRA continue to have such a powerful influence on this country?
money money money.
The NRA is also helped by a pretty straight forward 2nd amendment.
if I heard correctly, people were not surprised that he would do something like this.
unlike the usual, he's not the type who would do this, He IS the type who would do this sort of thing.
15.99 for a 100 rnd value pack? I remember when they were 9.99.
At least Pb is still cheap : (
9.99 for a value pack, that's damn cheap and you can reload the brass casings, too. that's good ole American Pb.
Mollen said that based on the autopsies, none of the victims could have been saved even if police managed to take them out immediately.
Ah, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Or maybe they were psychic and knew they couldn't save anyone, which is why they hung back.
One thing I don't understand is how stupid the shooter's former co-workers were. You've got a guy who always talks about how he loves shootiing his guns, hates his job and hates America, and you pick on him? That's damn near suicidal. They're just lucky he didn't go postal at the factory.
There might have been some other dude at his english class giving him some shit too. Doesn't justify it one iota but would make some sense.
Possible, but not supported by any evidence so far. An article said that co-workers teased him with a sing-song, "Wong. Wrong. Wong. Wrong." Another said he never really attended the English classes.
Besides, that's not relevant at all. I would hope that somebody wouldn't have a strategy that says "I'll keep picking on him because somebody else may be picking on him even more." The name of the game should be to avoid antagonizing obvious nutcases, not hoping others make better targets.
he should of gone postal at the factory but it's always the wrong place when it comes to these mass shootings.
guy get's fired and he shoots out an amish school or something like that. I'm really surprised there isn't any more workplace shootings??????
The NRA is also helped by a pretty straight forward 2nd amendment.
Not exactly
Who thinks of the late Mr Wong and his discount bullets as part of any regulated militia keeping us free?
Not me, but if you can focus on just one part then others are free to only read "...shall not be infringed."
The ammnd is pretty iron clad. Look how little has changed, despite days like last Friday. A couple pf dead presidents, one almost dead. As an Englishman I'm amazed how the gun control conversation is taboo in so much of America, you can't even have a rational conversation about it without getting people worked up. Nevermind the political hot potato is creates. sort of like abortion.
The correct thing to do is to read the whole thing, not any one part. "Well-regulated militias" are not necessary anymore. Haven't been for centuries. They were replaced by a professional military. And obviously, the right to bear arms was strictly to make such militias possible, except for gun nuts who believe the comma somehow separates the two parts of the sentences so they're unrelated. Thus, if militias are obsolete, there is no need for the citizenry to arm themselves to protect the country. Even in the depths of the World Wars, the government never told people to stock up on guns and ammo.
The cops were simply waiting for Hop Sing to run out of bullets before they entered the building. Remember their motto is: "to protect and serve ...OURSELVES!"
Gripe on the cops all you want, but in a situation when gunmen have taken control of a building, you need time to gather blueprints of the building and devise an insertion plan. If this isn't done properly, not only does it UNNECESSARILY put the lives of the police officers at risk, but also the lives of hostages in the building.
Want an idea of a gung-ho approach? Read up on the Beslan school massacre.
Want another idea of a gung-ho approach? Read up on Virginia Tech. Situation ended about ten minutes after the first 911 call said there was a shooter in the building. Why? Because the police moved in quickly, shooting the chain off the door. If they hadn't, there would have been a lot more deaths. They found hundreds of unused rounds on the shooter's corpse. Oh, and no police dead. I don't understand why you're comparing a lone gunman to a heavily armed band of terrorists. Especially since the "gung-ho approach" there took three days to unfold.
There is a big difference between this and Beslan. Beslan was a hostage situation! They had no excuse for not planning a rescue in an organized fashion. Binghamton was a killing spree as is most shootings rampages in the US; it would be idiotic to wait 45 minutes before barging in.
