NYU Accidentally Makes Fools Out of 489 Prospectives

2009_04_nyuoops.jpg NYU sent an email to nearly 500 students this week that they should pack their bags and get ready to make their way over to Greenwich Village this fall as members of Wagner School's next graduate class. An hour later, the school sent another email telling those same students to scratch that—they were actually rejected. To add insult to injury, the erroneous admission letters were sent out on Wednesday—April Fool's Day. A university spokesman said, “We know that any application process is accompanied by anxiety and we sincerely regret any misunderstanding, false expectations, or additional disappointment this error may have caused.” One of the students taken for the roller coaster ride called it the "Worst April Fools' joke ever." The university is investigating how the error occurred in order to prevent it from reoccurring.

didn't this happen already? I thought this "mistake" happened at nyu a couple of years ago. Anyone remember that?

  • Brainwash

I wonder when the first lawsuit will be filed.

what, in between posting on gothamist and surfing for porn I was supposed to check the veracity of those acceptance letters I sent?!

sheesh, how many hours do you think are in a work day?

In the future, a rejection will actually be an "acceptance" as schools find innovative ways to salve the tender feelings of these entitled brats: "Dear Useless Brat: We are pleased to inform you that NYU has accepted your application for our wonderful fucking Film School, but on a very preliminary basis as we do not have slots for 2,500,000 wannabe DeNiros. As such, you are under no obligation to attend any classes or even come to the campus. Our best advice should you desire to pursue your education further, is to attend any number of excellent schools in the SUNY system. Thank You and congratulations!"

You think that was bad, check this one out from Onion Head a few weeks ago.

"University of California at San Diego accidentally sent acceptance letters to 29,000 applicants that they had really rejected."

Depends on your major. Stern is difficult to get into.

Now I wouldn't say it's that easy - I think you need at least a C+ average from high school...

  • suepart

i thought that any idiot who can pay the tuition can get into nyu undergrad. now that's nyc news.

  • Kelly

This snafu didn't involve undergrad admissions. It says "Wagner School's next graduate class."

If it had happened to incoming freshman, it might be humorous, but unfortunately, these are the people looking to do public interest work.
