Jerry Stiller Drops Lawsuit Against Cab Driver

040309Seinfeld-Festivus_l.jpg After sufficiently airing his grievances, funnyman Jerry Stiller has "discontinued" his legal action against a cab driver who allegedly injured the 81-year-old actor back in 2006. The incident occurred after Stiller climbed out of a taxi on Madison Avenue, then reached back inside to retrieve something. Driver Sekou Bathily started to pull away while the Seinfeld star was still partially in the back, knocking him to the ground and giving him a concussion, a head gash, and knee and back injuries. One can only fantasize about the frothing invective that ensued. In his subsequent lawsuit against the driver and the Acme Cab Company, Stiller sought $12,000 for medical bills, but in dropping the litigation last week, it's unclear whether any settlement was reached out of court. According to the Post, his lawyer told a judge the case had been resolved "against my advice and at my client's insistence," so we're guessing they settled the matter with the traditional Feats of Strength.

Serenity found!

I think the tip for making sure a cabbie doesn't leave too soon is to pay him once you're out of the cab. That way you know he's sticking around.

No offense to the other Gothamist scribes, but John Del Signore is hands down the best writer on staff. This short and sweet article is a prime example of how he can turn a relatively blah news item into a pretty great read.

But that's just my opinion.

The staff at Gothamist is filled with talented scribes and JDS is no exception. He always brings a certain levity to a story. But I have to be honest, I read Gothamist for the comments.

I agree that they are all good scribes in that we all come back to read their stuff on a daily basis, but JDS's levity usually seems forced and falls flatter than the left side of Nancy Reagan's chest.

I read it for the comments as well.

12 grand huh? Probably came to his senses and realized his lawyer was the only one making any hay on this lawsuit.

Ah yes, lawyers. Gotta love when they insult the clients.

Stiller probably wanted to drop the whole thing b/c $12K is a relatively small sum of money to him, would involve a significant amount of aggravation and time, and his legal bills would have come to $20K.

Good for you Mr. Stiller for having some common sense.

Personal injury lawyers in cases like this usually work on a 33% contingency fee. If Mr. Stiller was smart about this, I hope he wasn't paying fees by the hour.

Is there really an Acme Cab Company? This sounds like it's on a radio drama from the 1940s.
