And last night Jon Stewart revealed to the world that NYC has been collectively working to drive Limbaugh away for years: "We knew he was into drugs, so we cleaned up Times Square. We knew he liked cigars, so we all made an agreement that people who smoke cigars are douchebags. Fleets of Ivy League educated cab drivers pretended to be surly Middle-Easterners just to annoy Rush Limbaugh...He was the Truman in our citywide Truman Show."

| Rush Limbaugh Leaves New York | ||||

UPDATE: This calls for a celebration! The New York Working Families Party will be Getting the Limbaught with a fiesta downtown at the Beekman this Saturday night. It's open to all, and they'll be recording farewell video messages to Limbaugh from people in attendance. Details here.

I knew there was a reason I love Jon Stewart. Now if only we could deport Bill O'Reilly to Florida too, we'd be making some real progress.
Good fucking riddance! Don't forget to settle up with your dealer on your way to the Lincoln Tunnel, you disgusting son of a bitch.
quelle horreur
I'm trying to think of a downside to Rush Limbaugh going away, but I can't come up with one.
No fan, but i bet his coming here from time to time meant work for a few new yorkers. Tips for the doorman etc. Maybe not a lot, but we seem to be in an every bit counts point in time.
It's sort of like the wall st mess; the only people to feel sorry for are the exotic dancers.
Please, have you learned nothing over the last thirty years? "Trickle down" economics are bullshit.
GOOD RIDDANCE, WOOT!!!!!!
Yeah, his dealer is going to have to find another hypocritical, right-wing blowhard millionaire to sell white-collar drugs to.
Not since the Dodgers left Brooklyn have the citizens of New York felt such a loss.
it's funny... because it's true
"Asked about Limbaugh's decision this morning, Paterson told reporters, 'If I knew that would be the result, I would’ve thought about the taxes earlier.'"
He might not be all that good at the Governor gig, but he does come up with a funny line from time to time.
I think this photo says it all:
"Rush Limbaugh??"
When people with money leave, everyone else pays. Even if it is some blowhard radio host who is departing.
It seems likely that Limbaugh is, ahem, downsizing. He's going to sell his 5th Ave. penthouse in this market? (Or does he have two apartments in NY? He seems to say he's selling an apartment and a condo and giving up his office lease. He's not that clear about the details.) And close down his office?
All because the NYS tax on those making more than $500k may increase from 6.85% to 8.97%? And the city might increase his real estate tax by 7%? No, FL doesn't have a state income tax but they make up for it by tax corporation, etc. The overall FL rate isn't that far from the NY rate.
My guess? Limbaugh's made some bad investments. (If he put even a fraction of his money where his mouth was over the last year or so, he's seriously hurting.) And the radio show, while getting a small increase in ratings recently from his psychotic Obama rants, must be hurting from the massive drop in ad placement going on throughout radio. (Not to mention whatever effect various boycott campaigns targeting Rush's advertisers have had on his income.) So, Rush is being forced to downsize and he's just putting the best face on the situation that he can by grandstanding about leaving NY.
However, regardless of his motivations, good riddance.
I doubt he's downsizing. His heavily publicized long-term radio contract is going to keep paying him eight figures a year for many years to come, regardless of the economy.
where are all the boisterous right-wingers on this post?!
Fetal position under their desks. "He left us!"
new york's gay prostitutes and black market viagra/oxycontin dealers' loss is the dominican republic's gain.
Personally, I'll believe it when I see it. Limbaugh blows smoke all the time; almost nothing he says is true. I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that tomorrow he says he's not leaving. Of course, not because it was all just more blowhard spouting, but probably he'll say he's decided to stay just because he's not wanted.
i hope he never comes back!
I find it sad how easily hate can be used to distract people from issues they would otherwise oppose.
The "tax increases on the rich" start at a household income of only $200,000! WAKE UP!!
I believe the proposal in the budget is $250,000 but either way... it's an increase of 1%. That means someone with a taxable income of $250,000 pays an additional $250 (and pays about what they would in New Jersey, and less than in California) or $4.81 per week. I really find it hard to believe that people at that income level will be driven to flee New York because of that "burden."
I disagree. It may not be a lot as you point out. But it will be the tipping point for a great many people. As of 2007, the wealthiest 1 percent generated 41 percent of the state income tax. If too many leave it matters.
I can't get past the fact that for every dollar we send to the gov they waste .50c. The governemnt is fueling this hate the rich mania so they can raise taxes on all of us. beer, wine, cigs, fees for everything, I'd even consider the MTA hike a hidden tax.
Full disclosure, I will not be seeing a tax increase. Unless something big happens on the career front (not likely).
I'm no accountant, but let's all do this together... $250,000 / 100 = $2500. I mean, you already HAD THE CALCULATOR OUT to compute the weekly cost!
you people don't read do you? the income tax part maybe only affects people at that point, but the property tax increases, dismantling of STAR, additional taxes on electricity, heat, telephone, registration fees, payroll tax increases, healthcare taxes, etc, etc. It adds up very fast. Even the middle class in NY pay well over 60% of their income to the state, city and feds. so please, don't be hoodwinked by the politicians who claim they are only going after the rich.
While it's all well and good to hate on Limbaugh and his ilk, if rich people really start leaving NY b/c of overtaxation the rest of us are really fucked. The senate spends like drunken idiots and if they don't have rich people to make pay for it, the rest of us will.
So yeah, Limbaugh's a dick, but that's also probably like $1M/year not going in to the state budget. People with means don't have to get kicked around by the state. I hope everyone realizes that.
And where are they going to go? They like NY and so what idf they have to actually pay their fair share?
Cry me a river. Trickle down never worked - still doesn't. Tax the MF's.
The sad part is the tax hike means nothing for Limbaugh. The guy makes millions...
jaycjay FTW. The tax hike raises their taxes by a trivial amount.
And to TKaisen, I seriously doubt that Limbaugh pays $1MM in taxes to the state of NY. He's not THAT rich. And being a Republican, he probably cheats on his taxes anyway and doesn't pay as much as he should.
"being a Republican, he probably cheats on his taxes anyway and doesn't pay as much as he should."
BO's recent cabinet picks would disagree with you.
don't go there... just take a look at Obama's cabinet. LOL
Last year's top income tax rate in the state was about 7%. The city's was just over 3%. Limbaugh's radio contract alone is around $5M/year. So, even if you assume his radio income is all he has (which I doubt, because I'm sure he does commercial reads), that's just over $500k in taxes.
But, yeah, we'll all listen to spoon. We don't need people like that funding the state. It'll be much better when the middle class, who can't necessarily move when the mood strikes them, to pick up the tab. Again.
... Limbaugh blows smoke all the time; almost nothing he says is true...
For the last week or so, I've been listening to what I can take of Rush and, yup, it's hard to find much truth in his rants.
Take today's rant about NYC taxes, for example, he was going on about a 30% tax hike but, doh, at a stretch it's a 2% hike in state taxes on people making over $500k and, perhaps, a 7% increase in NYC property taxes. Rush's tax increase is fairly trivial.
He's mad, or he sounds mad, at Obama, I'll grant him that but pretty much nothing else he says about Obama or anything else is true.
Rush's Big Apple listenership is estimated at 693,000. Amazing number considering how deep Blue the city is & that most of local radio is Spanish-speaking anyway.
I bet overwhelming majority of Gothamist posters never listened to him & only know him second-hand as a boogeyman, as portrayed by his unsuccessful rivals. Does anyone really listen to J.Garofalo & Lionel on AA? Anyone, anyone?
The moment he leaves, Manhattan will gain 2-3 feet in elevation and be less prone to Global Warming induced flooding. Huzzah!
Why is it taking that fat f*ck so long to OD?
As if he pays his fair share. Puhleeeeease.
