Full-On Sully Press

2009_04_sully.jpg While Miracle on the Hudson hero Captain Chesley Sullenberger hasn't been flying planes since splash landing US Airways Flight 1549 into the river back in January, he has been working on his media strategy. Last month, it was announced he was writing two books for HarperCollins' William Morrow imprint. The deal is reportedly worth $3.2 million and one book will be based on "the important lessons that helped him become the man and pilot he is today, including his boyhood, his military service, and the fateful emergency landing" (planned for later this year) and the other's subject is to be determined. Now TLC says it has interviewed Sully for a one-hour documentary—titled "Brace for Impact"—which will air sometime before next January. Till then, you can sate your Sully addiction by watching his and the Flight 1549 crew's 60 Minutes interview again.

Haven't we all had enough of this? It's just like the Wesley Autrey story that stuck around for months after it was played out.

What will the book be called?

Chicken Little - A True Story, I Swear!

cashing in kind of cheapens the whole "hero" label, no?

the heroic act spoke for itself and didn't require a ghostwriter.

I'm proud of Sully and what he did, but a book about how he became awesome seems to defeat the purpose.

I'll never get tired of this guy, or Autrey! Think of the book as a manual for today's youth.

I agree. Why shouldn't he cash in on his heroics?

Right? If douchebags can get rich off their shenanigans, why can't Sully do the same? I'd rather read about his life than Paris Hilton's.

OK. So the book is only 14 pages but it does have a nice dust jacket.

Sully testified under oath in front of Congress how the pilots' pension fund was wiped out, salaries were cut and he has to work 2 jobs at his age, like too many other commercial pilots, to earn a living.
If anyone is entitled to cash in, it's him.

Good for him! And anyone who hates the idea should go out and do something equally awesome, then show us all by turning down a seven-figure book deal.

If you look at his biography you will realize that he was no ordinary pilot. The man had balls of steel and the brains to know how to use them.

I have full-on Sully love and don't care what he feels like doing or how often he is mentioned on Gothamist; he's what a man is supposed to be or a woman or a human!
