New Restaurant Evokes Scotland As Tartan Week Approaches

The former Caffé Carciofo space on the corner of Court and Kane Streets in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn will soon open as new restaurant Watty and Meg. Court Street residents have noted a flurry of construction, and a Craigslist call for line cooks went out over the weekend. What we know: The restaurant will have 60 seats and feature an open kitchen; it also seems that its name comes from a ballad generally attributed to 18th century Scottish-American ornithologist Alexander Wilson, for whom The Wilson Journal of Ornithology is named. Ah, mystery. Thus Watty and Meg joins the roster of new Court Street restaurants with archaic names, like Buttermilk Channel and Café Pedlar, both of which have started strong. More details to follow as they become available.

In completely separate, but thematically related news, this Saturday kicks off Tartan Week 2009, which means some kind of Scottish wonderful will descend upon Midtown, and elsewhere. Reserve your haggis platter at restaurant St. Andrews today, and watch out for kilt-wearing Grand Marshal Alan Cumming leading the piper’s parade.

With all due disrespect, I've never heard anyone say: I could go for Scottish food tonight.

Fried Mars Bars on the menu?

Deep-fried Mars Bars on the menu?

Deep-fried Mars Bars on the menu?

Is single malt whiskey part of the basic food triangle?

How about spaghetti in a delicate Scottish sauce?

What do those people eat? They must eat something other than the mist off the foggy moors.

The old restaurant sucked. I really hope this place is good, as it's on my corner. Pleeeeeeeease.

In other news on the grape vine, Mucho Gusto, on Kane and Columbia Streets (where the cast of the Brooklyn Real World ate often), has allegedly sold their business to some Japanese restaurant. Switch over happening now. How stale do you think that fish is going to be with a location like that?

Neat, I'll have to give this place a try. Maybe they'll make haggis!
