Chimp Mauling Victim Speaks, Family Is Encouraged

2009_03_cnahs.jpg The Connecticut woman who was severely mauled by her friend's chimpanzee is making progress, according to her brothers. Charla Nash, who is at the Cleveland Clinic (she reportedly "lost her nose, lips, eyelids, hands and bone structure in her mid-face"), was upgraded to critical but stable condition from just critical condition. Stephen and Michael Nash told the AP that she said her first word—"Lisa," the name of her nurse—two weeks ago. Now she's asking for her daughter (helped by a voice box), listens to music, and "tells her nurses if she is cold, tired or wants to be left alone." However, she does not know how injured she is: "Michael Nash said that with her level of sedation reduced, she will probably start asking questions soon about why she is in the hospital -- and a trauma expert is there to help her." While it's still unclear what brain damage his sister has suffered, Stephen Nash said, "I'm a lot more optimistic now. Everything she does is going in the right direction." The Nash family has sued chimp owner Sondra Herold for $50 million in damages.

Wait - she doesn't remember what happened?! Christ...poor woman.

Yeah, it's really sad—one brother said they just told her she was hospitalized due to an accident.

Why doesn't she remember what happened?
I can speak to this issue clearly.
in 68 the car I was riding in slid off an icy mountain slope, the car hit the bottom about 300 ft.
Before it exploded my German Shepard pulled me from the area, I was already thrown out, but still close.
The car exploded, the passengers were killed, and so was my dog.
Only the smoke from the blast brought help, I was told months later, there were doggie teeth marks on my clothes, as they found him laying next to me.
I remember nothing of the crash.
Should Charla remember anything much either? I'd say it is best I don't remember. She will have to be told.

Those are some really bad parts to lose. Poor thing.

I am not trying to be snarky, but all I can think of is Gary Oldman's character from Hannibal. Not good. Poor lady.

You Sir, Make me horribnly sick to my stomach...comparing a beautiful woman who went to help a friend, with a crazed monster from a shoch movie...
in full makeup and gore to look the part.
As a former RN I find nothing funny in your comment.
You perhaps should walk through a burn center...and with your mentality don't forget your marshmellows jerk!

Will you be my escort? Then, yes

If she doesn't know what happened to her, doesn't that mean they're treating her without her consent? I find it somewhat disturbing that no one is asking an adult woman what she wants for her own treatment.

Nicemarmot, you really are an asshole.

I'm an asshole? No, I just wouldn't want to be saved from that injury - living without the entire front part of your head strikes me as a really horrible way to be forced to exist. Or as MT says, what happens if she decides she DOESN'T want to live with her injuries? She's an adult and she should have the right to decide whether or not she wants to live the rest of her life in such a grotesque manner.

Excuse me here,
But only this woman knows if she wants to live. I have seen people burnt beyond recognition, fight to live and tell others about the horrors of drunk driving, or in the case of David Rothenburg, his father set him on fire!!
Without her "Consent?" How stupid! The medical practice is to save, help and unless otherwise DNR or family begging them to give it up, it is their job to do all they can.
Charla is not obviously heavily sedated at all times..or she could not ask for her daughter, sit in a chair, speak her Nurse's name and listen to music.
I am terrified for her, when she does remember or know what has happened to her. But, still this is her choice.
I could strap all those making fun of this terrible tragedy, roll them into the room and stuff a sock in their mouth so they have to look at her, watch her and observe her struggle.
The gull of comparing her to a horror film! Yes, some see it that way, my brother came back from Viet-Nam and injured as he was, his wife filed for divorce within 2 days. He stayed with me!
He has since recovered his sight, the burns have faded almost to a point of un-noticible. But his heart breaks for the people he loved, and strangers who looked at him, in US Army uniform and gagged!
I will not let you people speak badly of Charla or her brothers discisons. Unless they toss me off here, I'll report each and every sick uncaring comment!
Too many of you to name, but you know who you are!

She seems incapable of any conscious reasoning. What would you have them do, let her rot on a gurney?

That makes it worse.
The family and doctors can all pat themselves on the back for 'doing everything' and a 'save' and 'covering their asses', but the woman pays the price. The 'brain damage' they're talking about is probably the equivalent of a frontal lobotomy, given where her injuries were....even better.

Nice job, guys.

100mg Morphine, please, stat.

I kind of hear ya... i would hope that my family knows i would not want to live my "life" like that.

It's tough. I don't know anything about medical ethics, but when paramedics and doctors and nurses respond, their goal is to save a life. And she's essentially been saved, so her family must support her recovery.

If she had a DNR on file, there'd be no issue. But at what point does a healthy middle-aged woman say to herself "Hm, I think I'll go to the hospital today and make sure I'm not resuscitated in the event that I'm horribly injured"?

I'd be freakin' pissed if my family made me live through that (although they know better).

What happens if this woman decides you doesn't want to live with her injuries? God knows I personally would not want to have been saved just to lead the life she will no doubt be leading.

"she reportedly "lost her nose, lips, eyelids, hands and bone structure in her mid-face"

What could her family possibly be optimistic about? This is horrifying!

She is probably on heavy duty pain-killers due to her injuries and until they can lessen the dosage she is probably incapable of understanding what has happened to her. Hence the fact that nobody has discussed with her exactly what her injuries are.

Is she a candidate for a face transplant, like what they've done in France and China?

That's why she was transported to the Cleveland Clinic. It was the first one in the US to perform a face transplant.

Damn them for letting her live through this. For god's sake. The doctors have done more damage than the chimp.

Everything she does is going in the right direction.

WTF? She lost her hands and most of her face and is brain damaged! How in the hell is this the right direction?

Well, the other direction would be death.

At best, in a fair world they would try to nurse her to consciousness, and when she was capable she could indeed choose to go the Kevorkian route.

Also, hopefully in the future we'll have some tools to understand exactly what her experience is like, whether to be heavily sedated all the time is a form or suffering or not.

In the meantime, this just seems like where we are at, technologically, societally, etc.

sweet christ. you're an evil bunch of fuckers masquerading your macabre glee behind "patient's rights." that's some sick shit, people. sad, too.

hopefully, you'll never have to face a tragedy like this and be forced to think outside your over-educated, emotionally-insulated boxes. keep those minds of yours good and narrow.

Again, many guys in Iraq have had grievous injuries like her and their will to live along with the support from their families pulls them through. The fact that her brain is functioning well enough for her to recognize her nurse and speak suggests a good prognosis for her recovery. The rest comes later, and it will be a very long road.

There's a similar story that just ran in Esquire:

http://www.esquire.com/features/chimpanzee-attack-0409

It really is "The Worst Story I Ever Heard."

All you people saying that she should just lay down and die because she has massive facial injuries should shape up and get used to it. You going to see a lot of nasty, frightening injuries returing from Iraq.

Is this what we encourage as cilivized people? That life is not worth living unless all of your body parts are intact? How shallow.

Sorry for the double post. Don't know how I did that.

Why is it up to us to determine if maybe she, even when
learning what happened, might decide she would like to
continue living regardless of what she will "look like".
Life is a gift and shouldn't be ended by some people
posting on a trendy website.

You mean the trendy website you are posting on?

I don't think any of us have that much power, but thanks for the confidence boost!
