Last night, a number of buildings, including the Empire State Building, plus numerous billboards in Times Square, went dark between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. for Earth Hour, "to make a statement on the need for effective action on climate change." While some structures did go dim their lights, much of the city was still glowing. Well, it's a step—last year, New York City didn't even participate!

And what, exactly, is turning the lights off on the Empire State Building for one hour supposed to accomplish?
It does not "make a statement on the need for effective action on climate change" -- and in any case such a statement is completely redundant, because everyone who wants to know about this issue has heard about it.
More posturing in front of the mirror -- that's what it amounts to.
Has anyone else noticed that the ESB has been shinning way past midnight for the last few weeks? I don't they have been turning it off until 2am lately. It used to go off at midnight on the dot.
This whole thing is really led by neo-luddites.
