Whitestone Bridge Shut Down Due To Sign Collapse

2009_03_signcol.jpg Around 1:30 p.m., an MTA construction truck struck a sign on the Whitestone Bridge, causing it to collapse onto the expressway. Two workers who had been on the truck were injured; a spokesperson told CityRoom one had a head injury and the other a broken leg. WCBS 2 reports, "The large green exit sign could be seen split in half on the bridge. The boom truck, which had been stationed up ahead, did not appear to have suffered significant damage." Traffic was shut down in all lanes so the scene could be cleared; drivers are being redirected to the Throgs Neck.

Just thought about all those drivers who paid (cash, not ezpass) to cross the bridge but ended up reversing and then having to pay again by crossing the Throgs Neck or RFK Bridge.

Is that what it was? It took me almost an hour to get from Yonkers to the Triboro toll plaza today on the Deegan.

    Unreal.

  • Rocknrope

So that's what the fare increase is going towards.

There is a mile-long line of trucks in Astoria trying to get onto the Triborough.

MTA driver and/or occupants of the truck can now file for disability. That's the American (public worker) way!

    According to CityRoom,

The boom truck was driven by Alpha Painting and Construction Company, a contractor for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority hired to paint the bridge’s Queens and Bronx towers, according to Judie Glave, a spokeswoman for the authority.

DUH! Somebody should get thrown in jail for this screwup.

So now the MTA is screwing up public AND private transit? They're truly expanding their reach!

The worse is yet to come.

    Oops!
