New Incentives for Hybrid Cab Fleets

0309greencab.jpg In a continuing effort to get the Taxi and Limousine Commission to turn green a little faster, the Bloomberg administration announced a new set of incentives for fleet owners with hybrid or other low-emission vehicles, the NY Times reports. Starting May 1st, taxi fleet owners can charge drivers $3 more per 12-hour shift for hybrid or clean diesel cabs. They will also be able to "penalize fleet owners by lowering the amount they can charge to lease cabs that use more fuel and pollute more, like the Ford Crown Victoria, the most common type of taxi." The new rule will decrease that charge by $4 per shift. While it would ultimately clean and green the streets of NYC, there are some opponents. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade called the plan "unconscionable," saying fleet owners bought their vehicles under the former lease cap. Currently of the 13,237 cabs in New York City, there are 2,019 hybrids and 12 clean diesel vehicles.

Funny. No one here seems to care.

What vehicle is using a clean diesel power plant?

I saw a VW Jetta TDi cab a few weeks ago.

Bloomberg should award drivers to use green cabs, not penalize them. In fact he should just go back to making his billions and stop trying to be a problem solver. He's not very good at it and is not much of an innovator outside his chosen pre-mayoral job.

If he wants to make a big stink about all this greening bullshit have the eco friendly cabs painted grass green, so the riding public have a choice when they hail a cab.

Any idea what you're talking about other than using this as an excuse to bash Bloomberg?

Hybrids cost substantially more to purchase and maintain, so this is a great incentive to get fleet owners to switch. Just like, oh, every business in the world, unless you're the owner, you're going to get screwed sometimes. In this case the drivers take a hit.

More to purchase but not to maintain. The fuel savings should cover most of the added expenses and also there are tax savings for fuel efficient vehicles.

"King" Bloomberg needs as much bashing as possible.

Snoopy never has any idea what he's talking about. Otherwise he would know that he undercuts his own argument. Fleet owners don't pay for gas. Drivers do. Snoopy talks about fuel savings, not understanding that it's the drivers who benefit from hybrids and save far more in gas costs than the extra $3 a day. In fact, one report says a hybrid taxi driver saves $25 in out of pocket expenses for gas per day. Hacks would be happy to switch to hybrids, but they can't drive what fleet owners won't provide. The $7 difference between what the fleet owners can charge for gas guzzlers vs. hybrids is an incentive to get them to replace the old taxis.

Talk to a tax accountant and find out how much the tax incentive is for purchasing a fuel efficient vehicle and see how much the fleet owners are really paying for upgrading. But then again you are three years away from getting your learners permit so it wouldn't matter to you.
