Reader David Velez (link NSFW) sent us these photos of a sad looking panda walking around downtown at Battery Park late yesterday afternoon. Was he laid off from the zoo? He was carrying a Duane Reade bag and kept his head hung low as he walked amongst the humans. Aw, depression era panda, you make us so sad. (Though the eye witness pointed out this could be some sort of fetish thing, in which case, gross.)
UPDATE: Seems a lot of people have fallen in fascination with sad panda. One reader sent in more photos (including one where he is unmasked! Which we will not post here). Someone give sad panda a book deal, we bet he's seen a lot on the mean (Wall) streets.

Jen stop kissing up to Jen.
This panda must die.
Ewww, a plushies reference? Yuck!
i work downtown and see this panda almost everyday. it's always hanging out at "the bull" by battery park. never sure what his/her purpose was, but it seems that people pay to take pics with it.
Please please please don't be an advertisement.
furries!
Win!
Thanks for the NSFW shout on the first link : (
Yeah, and bare ass full of cellulite should get a NSFW for sure.
You really think that ass is full of cellulite? What the hell kind of girls do you like, skeletons?
I am a woman, so yes, I consider that an ass full of cellulite.
As a woman, I'd hate to be your friend if that's what you consider an ass full of cellulite.
Is it the start of Pandamonium?
Looks like a Trigger Happy TV skit waiting to happen.
Redefining "walk of shame."
Sexual Harassment Panda got laid off again...
that makes me a very saaaadd panda :'(
'Don't-sue-people-panda'.
Any different than Elmo and Bugs hanging out on 42nd street?

Personally, i think the economy has gotten so bad that people dressing up in costume characters to ask for "donation" like those "superheroes" who hang out in front of Chinese Grauman Theater.
Definitely looks like a busker. I'm having fun imagining Sad Panda Busker getting into turf wars with the Statue of Liberty Busker or Tin Man Busker.
maybe he forsee's the "pandamonium" of the street crankiness this summer!
ba dum bum!
Yeah He is usally always by the bull, Sometimes he doesnt leave until after 6. He is not there today however.
I saw this guy on the subway at rush hour a couple months ago. Needless to say, nobody particularly noticed or cared. Gotta love New York.
Bamboo doesn't grow on trees! He's gotta do what he can to make bank.
I think he first popped up on/ or around 1/9/09 thats the first time I seen him around the bull, since then he's been around at least once every week. I only study him from a distance, being sure not to disturb his natural habitat.
The first time I spotted Sad Panda was 1/05/09 and I have been fixated ever since.
I'm just surprise he can breath in that thing for 8 hrs busking without even taking it off on his way home.
he better have a flask in there to keep up his spirits
Poor Panda!
The best thing to cheer him up would be the music of Post Panda!

If I am seeing right, those are two left-handed gloves. Is that some sort of signal?
That he's gay?
I seen him come out of a bathroom stall fully suited at Variety Cafe...
That's funny, I work right there and I never see him...
With all the arrows flying around the city ?
Pedo bear in disguise.
Must be a bear market ---- for China. If the panda starts dumping dollars all over the place, watch out.

There's nothing worse than a wannabe panda with an agenda.
Great. A Japanese busker. -rolls eyes-

That panda is not sad: he's just trying to hustle a few bucks from tourists in lower Manhattan. For the past few weeks, he (I assume he's a he) has parked himself at the north end of Bowling Green, near the statue of the charging bull, whose testicles every tourist seems to want to fondle. He offers to pose for photos with those clueless tourists and asks them to throw a few coins in a cup.
Perhaps he's a former AIG employee, I don't know.
The first picture is just awesome.

We spotted Sad Panda by Times Square about a month ago. (He must have been exploring outside his usual habitat.) Couldn't resist taking a photo and posting it on our blog for kids, asking them to suggest captions for the pic. Check it out: http://blog.scholastic.com/ink_splot_26/2009/02/create-a-caption.html
^^Astonishing how intriging this is to those above. It's like a cult of "Sad Panda" watchers and diarists. Horrific.

I NEED more sad Panda! Who's seen him lately?
He was in his usual spot by the bull statue around noon today. It was nice to see him since the rain has been keeping him away lately.
