More Women Going from Jobless to Topless

032309show.jpg The recession is making the adult entertainment industry increasingly competitive, and many employers in the field say they're flooded with applications from college-educated women who, until recently, held down white-collar jobs. Gus Poulos, the manager of Sin City gentleman's club in midtown, recently received 85 responses to a Craigslist job posting in just one day; he tells the AP, "You're seeing a lot more beautiful women who are eligible to do so many other things." A spokesperson for Rick's Caberet notes that 20 to 30 women a week are applying for jobs at the New York club, twice as many as last year's average. And Rebecca Brown, a new stripper in Chicago, says she earns more in one night than she used to make in a week as a trainer and bartender. The new job just took a little getting used to: "It is like giving a speech, but instead of imagining everyone naked, you're the one who's naked."

Not to mention that it looks good on a resume.

  • i would personally love to witness the tension between the pro's and the newbies.

i wonder if there's any animosity towards the girls who can skip on out when the economy gets better...

  • New Baby Hitler

Yeah, maybe there will be some cat fights! One can only hope...

  • billybob

  • Past Taliban

Proving once again the innate 'quality' of American woman.

  • aveB4life

is that jessie spano licking that disease infested pole? As class Saludictorian she should know better.

  • babyhitler

who cares? Girls in NYC have options. Most of the strippers here are butt ugly anwyay. You have to go to NJ or Long Island to see the hott girls cause those girls are eugenically blessed but live in a social desert so it's more BANG for your buck. In NYC all the attractive women are models or escorts, stripping is the lowest rung on a attractive woman's pole so to speak.

Obviously a girl with high expectations in life. All these dinner whores are shit out of luck it seems.

  • rdsizzle

I thought stripping was something that young women did to help them get through college...

  • Peter

All of them probably are shaved :(((((

  • hotstepper

someone should tell that young lass that pole-licking is highly unsanitary

  • JacqueMehoff

there should be a playboy pictorial coming out soon.

  • barryap

I hope "Girls of the Recession" is hotter than "Girls of the Depression," which was just women wearing barrels held up by shoulder straps.

  • matty

I guess you could say that these girls lost their shirts.

    HEYOOOOOO

  • verbal

The quality of hookers has gone up, and the cost has come down. Good times all around.

  • cncrocket

Not great if you happen to already be a sex worker. The new proliferation of willing bodies destroys living wages for people who already work in a stigmatized and risk-filled industry. Stripping, hooking, porn... Makes it harder for professional sex workers to get a decent rate...

  • jaycjay

Of course that's also the case in many other job sectors. Increasing unemployment lowers wages. Sex workers aren't more immune to the basics of economics than anyone else.

  • spiritross

    No society sucks.

This is just people trying to survive in this kill em all civilization.

    Don't blame the individual.

It takes all kinds in this life.

  • VanessaNYC

I'm not blaming the individual. I agree with you.

  • matty

how can you not blame the indivudual? It's not like stripping is their only alternative.

I've been laid before too and I didn't join a gay strip club or whatever.

  • VanessaNYC

Of course there is a such a thing as personal responsibility and I'm not into the woman as the victim mentality HOWEVER... I'm attempting not to be harshly judgmental of these women. I'm no prude. The economy sucks. This situation sucks. Mostly, it sucks that intelligent and accomplished women have to resort to this. It sucks that a bunch of monumental asswipes on Gothamist are calling these women whores.

  • barryap

I'm going to assume you meant "laid off." This one's funnier, though.

  • matty

    omg lol.

  • VanessaNYC

    This sucks.

  • Dead Himmler

Finally something good to come out of this bad economy.

  • BERT

    it ain't easy being sleazy.
