Tails Wag at the Barking Beauty Pageant

Yesterday afternoon some of the city's cutest canines competed in the Barking Beauty Pageant held at Richmond Shepard Theatre. The 4th annual event was to benefit the Stone Soup Theatre and the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition, and was hosted by the National American Miss Pageant's Leslie Hughes, who had a little help from her Yorkshire Terrier, SalliSue. The grand prize winning pup (dressed as Carrie Bradshaw) was showered with gifts that will further anthropomorphize it, like a fashion photo shoot.

This isn't ethical. Where's PETA?

Why isn't it ethical and what is your obsession with Peta? You hatred speaks volume about you

good lord!

and we wonder why other countries hate us...

I don't think they hate us because some of us care for dogs, I think they hate the Govt and the wars. Please don't scapegoat dogs for the hatred towards USA

I am not sure this this counts as "caring". Do you think the dogs are thinking about how pretty they look? Or would they be just as happy if you were playing fetch with them?

Dressing up dogs and throwing a fashion show for them may be perceived by some as reflective of a society who's priorities are a bit out of whack.

I am glad that the proceeds went to a shelter though.

Yes, people do have different opinions about dressing dogs up. I had a dog that grew up and I would never have dressed him. My girl likes to dress her dog. I don't really find it cruel but yes I don't actually think it is cool. Yes, thanks goodness it was for a shelter and not for the host's own pockets. peace

Now, I have so many new ideas for my cats.

What's worse — people dressing their dogs up for a beauty pageant or people dressing their children up for a beauty pageant?

At least a charity benefited.

at just what point does a dog become a rat and vice versa?

That first dog looks pretty fly, but the rest is god-awful. Who likes "pocketbook dogs," aside from the bitchy women who own them?

as josh spear, comedian, said at yesterday's pageant: some of these dogs are dressed better than me. in this economy, isn't it nice that someone is spending money to pamper someone they love?

Americanz are mentally ill when it comes to this type of thing. It's not normal to do this. Other countries who have way less then us don't even dream of doing this. They treat Dogs like Animalz. Not like human. You'd think they would do this but they don't. They don't treat them Like babies in strollers. Its a disturbance that has gotten way to far. I'm ashamed.

Be ashamed of the dog fighting and not of dog dressing.

Seven men were collared and 16 pooches were rescued when cops smashed a dogfighting ring in The Bronx, police said yesterday.

A dogfight was going on in the back yard of 108 E. 179th St. in Tremont when cops - acting on a tip from New Jersey state police - staged a raid at 11 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Spectators scattered as the cops nabbed the seven men and rescued the dogs, who fought in a 9-foot-by-9-foot fenced-in pit.

The leader of the ring wasn't there when cops made the arrests, police sources said.

One of the animals appeared to be badly hurt, police said.

I'm pretty sure the dogs did not have a good time.

I was there with my pup and, just so everyone knows, the dogs all seemed content and happy. Yes, dressing up a dog might seem silly to some people. But, the obvious love everyone had for their pets was very clear. Most people had those outfits strictly for shows such as this one. And, most of the outfits were made by the owners themselves. Again, it might seem silly to some people. But, better to be a spoiled and pampered pup than a neglected and abused one.
