Will Franco Make a Good Ginsberg?

0309francoginsberg.jpg

That's pretty much a rhetorical question, because the above photographic evidence is undeniable (okay, not everyone agrees). We can now see that James Franco will not only make a fantastic (looking) Ginsberg, but following the news that he's practically the next Proust all but confirms he can encapsulate the influential poet's spirit. The biopic he's starring in, the Gus Van Sant-produced Howl, is currently filming in NYC (where the actor attends school) and concerns the 1957 obscenity trial that almost got the famous poem banned. (Spoiler alert: Judge Clayton Horn ultimate ruled that "Howl" was of "redeeming social importance.")

Meanwhile, Jesse Eisenberg (friend of Gothamist) will also play Ginsberg in a movie set to hit the big screen in 2012, titled Kill Your Darlings—but that one will keep the focus on Lucien Carr and the murder of William Burroughs's childhood friend David Kammerer.

For a dose of immediate, live-action Ginsberg, check him out with Kerouac in this silent video as the two imbibe at Harmony Bar.

Is it just me or does ginsberg look like jeff goldblum?

Ginsberg does looks like Goldblum. Also, James Franco is dreamy! (Yes, I just watched Milk.)

I think Goldblum looks like Ginsberg.

Also, that silent video doesn't work.

when I go visit her in high school
and the guys she goes to school with...
...are strong and handsome
and really funny.
Like, do good impressions
of Jeff Goldblum and shit like that.
And, like, I just feel like a fat, dumb,
fucking stinky ass-turd when I'm there.

- What?
- It really... It sucks for my ego.

- Fuck Jeff Goldblum, man.
- That's what I say.

Wasn't Ginsberg a member of NAMBLA? I wonder if they'll show that in the movie. His poetry is a load of over-rated garbage anyway.

I've been working here a while now but I still can't quite figure out why the comment section of Gothamist is crawling with John Birch Society types.

"I'm a member of NAMBLA because I love boys too -- everybody does, who has a little humanity."

~ Allen Ginsberg, poet."

So simply acknowledging an unpleasant fact about someone you apparently admire makes them a 'John Birch Society' type? Sounds like a classic case of attacking the messenger when you don't like the message.

Is not liking the man's poetry considered an unacceptable breach of your political orthodoxy as well?

It's fair game. Ginsberg's pedophilia and association with NAMBLA are both part of the historical record and relevant to the post for this reason:

It's one thing to ask an actor to do a flamboyantly gay role. But would that same actor do a pedophile role?

"But would that same actor do a pedophile role?"

My guess is they'll skip the whole thing or try to sanitize it as much as possible although how one can sanitize a group as vile as NAMBLA is beyond me. I don't see this as a right wing/left wing issue either. Grown men raping boys should make people of any political affiliation sick.

So modern day hipsters are the descendants of these Beat Generation icons? How Cool is that?!

So, what boys did Ginz rape?

Franco needs to brush up on his blowjob technique. Ginsburg was apparently very adept at delivering a "wet Howl" in his UWS apartment.

I remember Howard Stern commenting on Ginsberg death. (Howard was a persistent tormentor of NAMBLA) After all the usual accolades & platitudes were read, he casually remarked that while Ginsberg membership in NAMBLA was nowhere mentioned, but he would've considered it a first thing to engrave onto Ginsberg tombstone.

Ginsberg went to the roof to see the enormous alien mothership.
