Gay Couple Attacked Outside Prudential Center

2009_03_prucenter2.jpg A gay couple tells PIX News they were victims of a hate crime this past Saturday in Newark, NJ. After the Brtiney Spears concert at the venue, Josh Kehoe and Bobby Daniel Caldwell walked a couple blocks to their car when 15-20 teens confronted them, called them "faggots," beat them, took Kehoe's cellphone and left Caldwell with his jaw broken. However, police don't think it was a bias crime since the victims said the teens allegedly robbed a group of women a few minutes earlier. Kehoe also said that there was no police presence outside the arena— where the NJ Devils play (and the Nets are playing some pre-season games)—and it took police 45 minutes to respond. NJ.com commenters are debating safety around "the Rock"—"Hundreds of thousands of fans have come to The Rock and have had great times without any crime whatsoever," while others" and "If you lived here you would know.. this is just the type of sh*t you deal with being gay in the area." Flashback to 2007, when city officials bristled over characterizations about violence in Newark?

you misquote the article, what you said:

"However, police don't think it was a bias crime since the teens allegedly robbed a group of women a few minutes earlier."

what the article said:

"The Essex County prosecutors office, however, says police do not believe the incident was bias-related. That may be because the victims told cops a group of young women was attacked and had their purses stolen just a few minutes later, according to the police report filed."

Thanks, adjusted to reflect that the victims apparently said the teens also robbed the women.

Huh? Two separate incidents: one was a bias crime and the other wasn't.

In the first incident, the attackers called the two men faggots before beating them. How is that not a bias ctime?

The logic is that a "bias crime" is motivated by bigotry. Using a slur is only evidence of the underlying motivation but not proof. Going on to rob someone else is evidence of a simpler motivation (robbery/greed/general scumbaggyness). That's what I get out of it, anyway.

I guess it presents an easy out to anybody who loses their shit and attacks somebody out of bias. Quick, hit somebody else!

So they're homophobic and misogynistic?

This is why Newark can't have nice things.

Sad, but true. Cory Booker tried, he's still trying, but the odds are just too great especially now with the economy in the crapper.

Newark can have the Nets. Please take them!

They were beaten and robbed yet everyone gets seems more upset about what the scumbags said.

I'm pretty sure straight people have been victimized in Newark too.

this must be a hate crime, because according to the police report, they were very polite to the group of women they robbed, often apologizing and referring to them throughout as "milady" and "your highness."

Maybe the assailants were raising money for their local rotary club?
Now that I think about it, assuming these two gents had $50 each on them, that's not much of a score for 15-20 hooligans is it?
Kudos to us all for creating communities like Newark.

pat yourself on the back for this one... I would never step foot in Newark at any hour. To call it a community is too kind-it should have been bulldozed decades ago and left barren...

Newark, a dump of a town with nothing but thugs living there. I totally agree with whitecastlerock, doze it and make an extra terminal and runways for the airport in its place.

The class of commenter on that nj.com story is unbelievable. We're like a cotillion in comparison, and we have someone named BabyHitler.

Ironbound is a decent part of Newark, with best Spanish & Portuguese food around. Rest of that sad burg is a 9-5 place. After 5 all gov't bureaucrats hop into their cars & run for their lives, while trash takes over deserted town. No wonder every venue in Newark is directly connected to a highway to faciliate escape, while buildings are connected by air bridges, lest employees had to set their feet on local pavement.

Despite Booker's valiant attempts Newark is doomed, which is sad because it has so much potential due to its location.

The decline of Newark is directly related to the rise of the automobile, and a delibrate policy of favoring private automobile use over all other forms of transportation in New Jersey, which is the most densely populated state in the USA.
If Corey Booker wants to revive Newark, he will need to vastly expand the light rail system to cover the whole city and provide 24 hour service, like the PATH train station does in downtown Newark. Otherwise, you will just see the area within walking distance of the one PATH station in Newark become gentrified.
Newark used to have an extensive system of Trollys running on rails throughout the city and connecting to the rest of North Jersey, they where replaced with inefficient, but cheaper, buses after World War II. Newark is full of empty commercial office space downtown, that should be rezoned as residential, so people can legally use them as loft space.

Why waste your time giving a rational response that has anything to do with NJ? Provincial NY'ers could care less.
If you did not know, "B&T'ers" are the source of all the problems in NYC.

It's funny how some folks complain about B&Ters when they live in places like Queens or Brooklyn...

Two words that always level the New York vs New Jersey playing field: Long and Island.

Yes, Jersey Cityest, I believe you're correct, it is the fault of Henry Ford and the Dodge Brothers.

Newark + Britney Spears + a gay couple = emergency room. But that formula works many ways...

So let me get this straight. Black people cannot be charged with hate crimes even when they commit hate crimes?

Where is Al Fagton when you need him?
