Jackie Mason Angrily Denies Accusations of Racism

031609mason.jpg During a performance at the Loews Regency on Park Avenue Thursday night, comic Jacke Mason referred to President Obama as a "schwartza," which, depending on who you ask, is either a benign Yiddish word for "black" or a racial slur equivalent to the n-word. TMZ was all over Mason after the schwartza-bombing, which prompted at least one audience member to walk out, "reportedly" fuming, "He's more offensive to the Jews than Madoff tonight." Speaking on the phone to TMZ, Mason explained, "I was raised in a Jewish family where 'schwartza' was used. It's not a demeaning word and I'm not going to defend myself... What about the demeaning words blacks say about Jews? If it's a racist society, the white people are the ones being persecuted because they have to defend themselves." And after being confronted by a camera-wielding TMZ troll yesterday, Mason angrily dismissed the controversy: "Why don't you ask Kid Rock. What's his name? The comedian. Chris Rock. Why don't you ask him what he said about white people... White people have no freedom of speech. I'm telling you, fuck you and that's it!" Of course, Al Sharpton has now piled on.

    Jackie Mason is funny.

Of course blacks are an infinite source of comic material. They have more things wrong with them than any other race. We in America cannot poke fun of their shortcomings. We have to pretend that they are equal. What a joke that is.

Try this some time. Listen into a black conversation. Then tell your friends exactly what you heard. If they're normal human beings you and they will be laughing your heads offs. Also your friends will have funny stories to tell about black in America.

Of course Jackie is a racist, but so was Martin Luther King Jr. European Americans need to get kick the white guilt drug habit. Jews look out for Jews. Blacks look out for blacks, Hispanics look out for Hispanics.

It is time European-Americans started looking out for European-Americans. The year 2042 European Americans will be a minority in their homeland. Some suicidal white people want that. Sane people want their race to live on.

I had the unfortunate job of working for Jackie Mason's show last year when he performed "The Ultimate Jew" at New World Stages. I love racist humor. It's probably one of the best kinds. However, Mason doesn't do "racist humor"...he's just racist. The only people who stayed for the entirety of the show were the 75-95 year olds who made the trek in from one of two places...Long Island or Florida. Yes, there is actual humor used to poke fun at the Jews, but the "black jokes" are hardly jokes. He is blatantly racist. We had people walk out on a nightly basis...usually young people who were offended by his outright racism. It wasn't "schwartza" that got to people so much as his "biting social commentary" about black people, Indians, and Chinese people especially. He is the furthest thing from a comedian, and uses his whole Jew thing as an excuse for him to be racist about others. "But I'm a Jew, I was persecuted, I can do whatever I want!" The man is an idiot and I never laughed once at any of his "comedy."

  • JacqueMehoff

    that's right,

I hear Eli Wallach says "schwartza" a lot when he speaks to Anne Jackson. can you tell I enjoyed watching Broadway the golden age DVD?

  • NannyState

"I said, 'Henny, you're not such a Youngman anymore.' And he said, 'Shecky, you're still too Green'. Oy, someone call a cab, I'm outta here."

  • NannyState

    And during Purim!

  • dogisdead

To be honest, this word was a part of my upbringing - that of being an Ashkenazi Jew.

Jackie Mason, while extremely dated, is the last of a dying breed of the original comedians (Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, etc). To hear him say that word doesn't strike me as necessarily racist, but more so nostalgic. Similarly with Yiddish, one of the primary objectives of the language was to retain the religion even with the scattering of Jews due to religious persecution, etc. Call it racist if you will, but for many older Jewish folk feel that they can identify with Mason through his use of Yiddish phrases infused into his (also outdated) comedy routine.

Ides is the reigning champeen of strawmen arguments and impotently complaining about the president. Plus, just because it LITERALLY means black doesn't mean it's not racist; Polack means 'Polish' in Polish but it's still racist. Same goes for 'Chinaman.' Guess what guys, you don't get to dictate what words racist societies used to abuse racial minorities!

  • ides_of_march

Polish is a race now? I thought it was a nationality.

  • ides_of_march

Mason called a black guy black ---- oh the horror!

  • ides_of_march

It's simply unacceptable to criticize Obama in any manner. Just ask Jim Cramer. Obama and his administration deal with criticism about as well as Josef Stalin.

  • JRod5417

"What about the demeaning words blacks say about Jews?"

So, I guess he thinks two wrongs make a right. I don't get how his career has lasted so long since his brand of humor is devoid of humor.

  • pierrevonbaron

john del signore, is it your assignment or your passion to cover stories like these? or do you get paid per click? at least this one is more newsworthy than a photo of a kid (albeit a terribly offensive kid) in blackface.

  • whitecastlerock

When rap star Lil Wayne stops using the "n word" and espousing hatred towards women and homosexuals, Jackie should retire that little bit from his very stale act...

  • barryap

On one hand, schvartze means "black," so in a literal sense it's no more racist than calling an African-American black.

But then there's the Jews who use the word as, basically, Yiddish code for the n-word. And if you deny that some do, you're deluding yourself.

  • Potty Boy

Regardless of the literal or common meaning of a race-based word or phrase, an otherwise innocuous word can be said in a derogatory manner. And a mean word can be said with a light-hearted intent. So, whether or not "schwartza" is in itself a slur, you have to judge on context. From what I know of Mason and his routine, I find it highly unlikely that he was trying to sound prejudiced.

Incidentally, I looked up the word in "American Slang", 2nd Ed., which has all types of curses, etc. The book contains the terms "shvartze" or "shvartzer", which is close enough. It has symbols indicating that it is highly offensive, but oddly enough, the definition was omitted, and that must have been a simple editorial mistake.

  • ides_of_march

Oh please. Whenever somebody wants to accuse someone else of racism who hasn't actually said anything racist, they drag out the convenient but pathetic "code word" excuse.

  • turkishjade

I'm a little lost... what demeaning words do blacks say about jews?

  • Guest

Do I really need to refer you to the works of Elijah Muhammad and Louis Farrakhan, or are you just being facetious?

  • turkishjade

Rather, could you bulletpoint it for me? Seriously, I have traveled in all circles and I've heard a couple of words that Jews use, but I've never heard words that Blacks use against Jews.

Against White people in general, sure, but specifically against Jews I have never heard.

  • Spirit of 76

Jackie Mason is still alive? I would have thought he went belly up with the Borscht Belt.

  • Homer2323

Consequences? Good one. Like what? Its not against the law, there is nothing you can do. Consequences of Al Sharpton and commentors? Oh no! Stop using the word b/c people dont like it? Amazing. If people are fake offended, that is too damn bad. Somehow, Politburo, you are going to have to pick up the pieces of your life and move on.

Arent we all just a little too sensitive?

  • Politburo

Can you point to where I said I was offended or expressed offense?

I pointed out the huge holes in Mason's 'freedom of speech' and 'we always used it' defenses. Anything else you read from my comment was fabricated in your mind.

  • Bubba

    I can't understand a word of Mumbles Mason's spiel...

  • Politburo

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences of your speech, Mr. Mason. And while your family may have used the word in question many times, that also does not mean that you are free from the consequences of using it. As to whether it is demeaning or not, I cannot say, but since there seems to be some disagreement, why not simply stop using the word?

  • Polite New Yorker

Jackie Mason was kicked off of Rudy Giuliani's first campaign for mayor when he called David Dinkins "a fancy schwartza with a mustache."

Chris Rock said of blacks, "We don't hate Jews, we hate White people..."

Neither one is racist. They're comedians for fuck's sake!

Like I said before: "anti-racism" is the new McCarthyism. It has been for some time, actually.

  • Rocknrope

"We don't got time to dice white people up into little groups. l hate everybody. I don't care if you just got here."

    "Hey, l'm Romanian.

    You Romanian cracker!"

  • rdsizzle

I think anti-racism was more a thing of the 90s. The new trend is now about anti-homophobia.

  • JacqueMehoff

so that's why he wasn't on the Broadway DVD

set PBS was pitching last night?

    they all loved Laurette taylor.

  • Dirk

Wow, this is the most press Jackie Mason's gotten in decades!

  • fugothamist

    its ok if you're jewish

  • mocanlagunas

    haha!

    What a bunch of morons...

  • fugothamist

jackie mason is one of the most racist entertainers i have ever seen. and a grade-A assh*le

  • kcin122

it seems jews and black people dont get along very well.

  • famdoc

What is the stand-up equivalent of jumping the shark?

Mason jumped the shark years ago.

He is less relevant to the Jews than Sharpton is to his constituency.

  • Brooklynbobby

"Of course, Al Sharpton has now piled on."

    Now, there's a REAL 'schwartza'!!!
