Following that sentiment, I went to HS a few miles from where the Tawana Brawley event occurred. Afterwards, I met Spike Lee, who was filming "Malcolm X," a few yards from my high school. He was very nice to field Qs from a bunch of totally white HS kids. I asked him if he thought that there would every be racial reconciliation btw blacks and whites (the tension at the time was beyond anything anyone could could imagine today.)
Lee responded very frankly: "I don't know. Things look pretty bad."
A few years later I was watching Public Enemy stage a show with thrash-metal band Anthrax. The crowd was mixed. It may have been one of the most socially encouraging moments I've ever experienced.
