This year is will be the 248th St. Patrick's Day Parade. While the parade honors Saint Patrick, the patron Saint of the Archdiocese of New York, it's become a popular celebration of anything remotely Irish, be it the heritage of a person or a beer.
The National Guard's Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment, which had been deployed in Afghanistan, will be leading the parade. This year, the parade's Grand Marshal is Michael Gibbons, the President Emeritus of the Ireland-U.S. Council; here's a PDF of the Line of March—Mayor Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Governor Paterson, plus other officials will be present.
At 11 a.m. tomorrow, the Saint Patrick's Day Parade will start at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue and will travel up Fifth Avenue to 86th Street, finishing around 4 or 5 p.m. Which means there are many street closings—besides the parade route, the parade formation area is 44th to 46th Streets from Vanderbilt Avenue to Avenue of the Americas and 47th to 48th Streets from Park Avenue to Avenue of the Americas. While the Central Park transverse roads will be open to traffic, the NYPD says, "Pedestrian crossing along the parade route will be permitted on 49th Street to 55th Street, 57th Street and 58th Street, 59th Street east bound only and 60th Street west bound only." So take mass transit—the LIRR and Metro-North are running extra trains
The MTA, however, wants to remind you that alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the trains, platforms or stations. The NYPD reiterate that and add that alcohol consumption during the parade is prohibited: "Persons found with alcohol may be subject to summons and/or arrest. Police Officers will confiscate alcoholic beverages brought to the parade, as well as any of the following locations: Port Authority Bus Terminal; Staten Island Ferry Terminals; Grand Central Station; Penn Station; Central Park; and any public street.

donotwant
LIRR & Metro North both permit alcohol consumption, although on this and a few other days a year I'd bet they wish they did not.
"LIRR & Metro North both permit alcohol consumption, although on this and a few other days a year I'd bet they wish they did not."
No, on this and a few other days a year they do not. I happened to ride the LIRR this afternoon, and they were already running automated announcements that alcohol would not be permitted on trains, on platforms, or in stations on St. Patrick's Day.
There will be plenty of drunk people on the LIRR, Metro North, and the subways later today. I remember one year I was on Metro North during St Patrick's Day and it wasn't a pretty sight. Tons of drunk people and the train was standing room only.
The LIRR tonight will definitely be a disaster... If it isn't drunk guidos headed out to Babylon on Saturday nights/ Sunday mornings it is the wannabe Irish drunken jocks on St. Patrick's day... How many tax dollars are spent scraping puke off the sidewalks? Avoid First Avenue in the upper 80s as all of the drunkard cops and firefighters will be holding court, being disruptive and vomiting with impunity
At what other of the dozens of major parades that take place every year in this city does the NYPD conduct such major operations against the consumption of alcohol? The Puerto Rican Day Parade? NO! The West Indian Day Parade? NO! Chinese New Year? NO! The Polish Parade? NO! At all of the other parades that take place the NYPD are ORDERED to turn a blind eye to minor infractions like having an open container or a joint. Yet at the Saint Patrick's Day Parade every single year the NYPD are ORDERED to have zero tolerance of anyone drinking alcohol anywhere in the city- even if it is MILES away from the parade at the F'ING STATEN ISLAND FERRY TERMINAL! (BC we all know Staten Island is full of Micks not Guidos) This is insane every other ethnic group gets a free pass but if you are Irish on March 17th and have an open container you are getting a large fine if not a trip to the tombs.
March 17th= NYC DISCRIMINATES AGAINST THE IRISH DAY!
Good. I'm glad. Your buddies "on the job" are always brutalizing people n the streets.
Are you joking, Most of the NYPD cops are Irish and they don't target people for arrest as they do the puerto ricans in their parade.
So if the NYPD has Irish cops targeting Irish-Americans racism is different standards against the Irish is okay then?
No I never said it was ok but I noted that NYPD don't target people in the Irish parade for arrest but give them stern warning but not to a puerto rican. NYPD would arrest a puerto rican the first opportunity available without any warning. We know that most of the Irish cops will look the other way on any minor infractions. It is their day as well.
Do you people making derogative comments about the Irish even know any? New York is a multi cultural city. As my sister in law from the midwest once said, "How do you people know who's Irish, Polish, German, etc. Italian, Spanish, Greek..." Think about it. Once a year there's a parade. It's been happening for over 200 years! Long before many of the complainer's ancestors even arrived in the US. lol. There are literally people from all over the world living in NY. It amazes me that in a so-called world class city, there is so much resentment and ignorance.
As one poster commented, nothing is said about other ethnic groups. It's soooo politically incorrect. Yet alright with the Irish (and Italians, too) to put down, since these groups are white.
Not sure if I'll be banned for saying this but, I don't think those planes on 9/11 were flown by the Irish. Think about it.
Btw, referring to an Italian American as a guido is the same as calling a hispanic a Spic. Yet, people freely use this term.
Sorry the parade upsets so many people. At least with all the extra police around, didn't have to worry about the terrorist blowing up anything. Now, that's something to complain about!
I feel sorry for those poor carriage horses in the midst of all that havoc
GROAN! YAWN! NEIGH!
They like it. They want to show off their awesome hats.
They like it. They want to show off their awesome hats.
There's a considerable difference between an Irish parade-goer cracking open a beer at their parade & a Puerto Rican parade-goer raping another at theirs.
And if you're going to make a claim that most Irish cops are Irish, back it up with a statistic.
so every Puerto Rican parade-goer should be treated as a potential rapists? Also then all cops should be treated as potential rapists as well then one recently raped a drunken female executive at her home.
March 17th: The White Trash Day Parade and the Puking of the Green!
Top O' The Mornin' To Ya.
That prohibition only applies to open containers, right? Otherwise it appears to be quite draconian (and illegal).
I spotted a couple of fine lads holding pint glasses filled with amber ale wandering the streets near Penn Station @ 8:45 this morning... They didn't seem concerned
I can't remember a time I haven't seen at least one person brown bagging it on the evening trains, today notwithstanding.
I hope the cops nail every person with an open container. That's the only thing that will give me satisfaction short of the elimination of St. Patrick's Day altogether. I'm half-Irish, but even if i wasn't, i'd be disgusted at how St. Patrick's day celebrations Ihave become an orgy of drunkenness and an excuse to engage in all sorts of bad behavior. ALl the cheap jameson and guinness bric-a-brac that appears on the walls of bars, the oversise green hats, the green beer, etc. It's an abomination of the cultural symbols of the Irish.
I realize that the Irish have been subsumed within the "white" slot in the crayola box of American racial categories, and we're therefore not allowed to be offended, but St. Patrick's day is really a disgusting spectacle and an insult to every person of Irish descent with an ounce of pride in their heritage.
Don't know where you got the idea that white people can't be offended. Remember the Sopranos actors and the Italian-American parade?
In any case, the way the holiday is often celebrated doesn't offend or insult me at all. Sure it's a bastardization of the culture, but in my mind it is not malicious.
Any good Orange Order parades today?
