Last Night's Action: One Away From History

  • Devils 5, Coyotes 2: With Wayne Gretzky watching from the opposing bench, Martin Brodeur moved to within one win of Patrick Roy's all-time wins mark. Win No. 550 came on a 26-save performance and set up a chance to tie the record in Montreal -- Roy's former stomping grounds and Brodeur's hometown. Brodeur's chase of history is a nice distraction for the Devils, who have the division under control as the season starts to wind down.
  • Syracuse 127, Connecticut 117 (6OT): That's right, six overtimes. That means the the two teams played 1.75 games in the final Big East quarterfinal. Syracuse blew a seven-point lead at the end of regulation and had what would have been a game-winning Eric Devendorf 3-pointer waved off at the final buzzer. The teams then finished tied five more times before Connecticut ran out of gas. Jonny Flynn had 34 -- including 16-of-16 from the line -- to lead the Orange, which gets West Virginia next. Thanks to foul trouble, Syracuse walkon Justin Thomas picked up his first rebound of the season. Flynn played 67 out of 70 minutes. Unreal.
  • Rangers 4, Predators 2: Maybe the Rangers do want to make the playoffs. Sean Avery scored the first goal. Scott Gomez, Marc Staal and Fredrik Sjostrom added later strikes as the Rangers picked up a road win .At one point, the team was down 2-1, but three unanswered too care of that.
  • Islanders 3, Canadiens 2 (OT): Don't look now, but the Islanders have won three of four and have points in all four of those games. Kyle Okposo They still have the fewest points in hockey, though. That's the bad news.
  • West Virginia 74, Pittsburgh 60: Pitt may still get a No. 1 seed, but this doesn't help its cause. The Panthers trailed by two at halftime and then got run out of the building in the second half. Seeing Pitt out before the final of the Big East Tournament is strange, but the basketball world should still see plenty of the Panthers later in the month.

Do NOT want to make the playoffs? Don't you mean do want to make the playoffs?

Good win for the Rangers after a terrible showing in Carolina.

Nice slip up by Torts in the press conference, "Sean's line, umm, I mean Scotty's line." Which one is the team's "marquee" center?

What's with the constant coverage of this minor sport league called NHL? Do we have enough Canadian transplants to justify this? So is this Brodeur record like pitching s shutout in the minor leagues or something, who cares!

If you don't care - don't comment, don't read.

It's that simple.

Sorry but I had to endure reading through the NHL nonsense (and seeing the picture) before I get to the important basketball scores. NBA, NCAA, MLB spring training and maybe tennis should come ahead of the NHL.

I have a sneaky feeling that Roy is somewhere plotting Marty's demise. Patrick is a horrible sport when it comes to someone getting near or breaking his records.

Maybe he'll send his son to the next Devils game to administer a beating.

Obviously, you care, Dude69, as you post almost the same idiotic comment every time there is a post about the hockey scores. If you don't watch it and don't like it, why comment?

Don't worry, though. Your snooze-inducing sport of steroid-shooting primadonnas will be back in action real soon.

"Obviously, you care, Dude69, as you post almost the same idiotic comment every time there is a post about the hockey scores."

It's cool. Increasing the click-thru rate to pages with hockey stories could only mean more of them.

Hockey ratings might have dipped across the country in the past decade, but it's still extremely popular in NYC. You should try to get Rangers tickets some time. You can't unless you scalp or pay double via craigslist or ebay. The Garden sells out for the Blue Shirts even when the Rangers are in the basement, let alone when they're in the playoff mix.

Yeah, Marty may be one away from history, but Lundqvist MADE history last night with his 30th win - only goaltender to have at least 30 in his first four seasons. Not even Marty can say that. The pic should be of Hank.

In each of his first four seasons, for those of you who can't follow (Dude)

BTW - The Islanders won three of four last week also (against Colorado, NJ, Phoenix, lost to NYR). Overall, they're 5 of 7...not too shabby for a last place team auditioning for next year.
