Scott Stringer the Latest Dem to Challenge KGill

2009_03_stringer.jpg While no Democrats have jumped on the declining poll numbers of Governor Paterson to suggest their own potential run for governor, they seem to be chomping at the bit to exploit the potential vulnerability of new Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Yesterday Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said he's considering a run, telling the Times, “Voters have an expectation for a Senate seat held by Kennedy, Moynihan, that there will be a discussion of issues through the electoral process.” Stringer added that he would not run in the primaries if another potential candidate does—Long Island Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. Despite Gillibrand's softening of many of her pro-gun stances while in the House, Maloney continues to sound unimpressed by her. Maloney said, “She’s turned her opinion on just about everything, but people are seeing through that. Who is she? What does she stand for? That’s going to be her biggest problem, that she flips on everything.”

"I'm going to run, unless somebody else runs" doesn't bode well for Stringer's candidacy.

I am so worried that Gillibrand is going to push her pro-gun agenda through a Democrat controlled Congress and get President Obama to sign it.

What's the problem if she's actually softening her stance on the issues thereby adopting more gun control oriented views (much like her predecessor)? Politicians are opportunists and these opportunities happen to be, not surprisingly, popular sentiment in New York. Yeah, she turned her opinion on many of her previously held stances when she served in the House because oh, I don't know, that's probably what got her elected there in the first place? Now she's in the Senate and thereby adopting more conventional stances in line with statewide electoral politics.

As many have said before me, the 20th district is among the most conservative in NY. It is rural with the biggest "urban" area being Saratoga and Hudson. New York State is much more complex.

KG's votes and views reflect that of her constituents. As the complexity of the people she represents evolves, so does her views. I would find it a problem if she didn't modify her stance to reflect the opinion of the people she serves.

She will do just fine.

And the point of this is?No vote from me. Maloney, maybe. Stringer who?
