Charla Nash, the Connecticut woman who was severely mauled by a friend's pet chimpanzee, remains under sedation, according to her doctors at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. The Stamford Advocate reports that they revealed the extent of her injuries as well: Nash, 55, "lost her nose, lips, eyelids, hands and bone structure in her mid-face and suffered significant brain, eye and tissue injuries in the attack." The hospital said that while her injuries have stabilized, "critical issues still remain related to a significant traumatic brain injury and injuries to her eyes that threaten her vision." The Stamford, CT police say the toxicology results for 200-pound chimp Travis, who was shot dead after the attack, will be available in the next few days. The decision whether the police will charge Travis's owner, Sondra Herold, (the police's criminal investigation is continuing) will take weeks. Nash's brother Stephen told the AP, "She's tougn. I'm optimistic. I think she can do it."

When the doctors saw the extent of her injuries, the humane thing would have been to let her go! The extreme and unnecessary "heroic" efforts had no discernible added value to the quality of life of the woman or helped to alleviate her pain and suffering. No common sense was used in her treatment. It just seems that the doctors just blindly fell into an automatic response to practice their skills for the next, perhaps more deserving, victim.
This whole thing is like the Movie, "Johnny Got his Gun" where the horribly mutilated soldier was kept alive to experiment on because the doctors believed that he was a vegetable that couldn't think or feel.
I pray for her and her family, but her loved ones can never get any comfort from having her hollow body laying there; only being able to gargle odd throaty sounds whenever she itches, is hungry or feels any other pain or need.
This is so sad. It is wrong to hope that she dies?
Now I know never to watch "Johnny Got His Gun".
A lot of servicemen in Iraq have been badly disfigured and yet they find the will to go on. The worst thing about this is the brain injury. It may clear up in time but if she has profound brain loss, it might be better if she slipped away.
OMG, if anything like this ever happened t me, I only hope they would let me die, or even assist me in dying. This is just a hideous story. Poor woman.
How about this: bring her out of the induced coma. Ask her if she wants continued treatment. You can't put an adult through something like this without asking their consent.
Why does it take so long to get the toxicity reports?
This would have never happened if the ignorant owner would have never taken the chimp from it's home in nature. I can't believe that in 2009 people are still stealing wildlife from their habitats.
Chimps are not pets, science projects or human toys. They should be left in the wild where they live. Perhaps this will be a wake up call to all those people thinking of getting an "exotic" aka "should not be in human home left in the wild" pet.
Well, this lady did not go out and steal a chimp. The ape was in TV commercials and stuff like that, and she adopted him. Not sure how she acquired him though.
I predict criminal charges for the chimp's owner. Not for the jail time, but for the liability.
By the way, Johnny got his gun was the movie in Metallica's "One" video.
Oh, how terrible!
Looks like her condition may be hopeless, just like our economy's after it was mauled by GW Bush & Friends.
Looks like my WILL has to now include:
"in any instance where a mauling results in the loss of my ability to care for myself, please fucking just put me to sleep"
The chimp owner should have a mental evaluation. She obviously couldn't control her 'pet'; He ran wild through the town years before and this time she had to call her neighbor for help getting him back in the house. The state should have removed him from her home the first time he was out of control. This lady's relationship with her chimp was unhealthy. I read in one article that she drank wine with him and they snuggled in bed togther. It was a wild animal! And now an innocent woman is left for dead. I believe the owner should face charges and be liable for all bills this creature has caused. I would hope that other chimp and wildlife owners would learn from this, but most have the attitude that 'their animal would never do that.' I would hate to see another innocent person suffer because of a situation like this.
The owner and this friend (the victim) were "correcting" the chimp, hitting him with with a snow shovel, giving him antidepressants, and of course some booze.
These people were beyond reckless.
Unfortunately the chimp's owner is like, 70-something and not rich; the most they can do is jail her I guess. Or finally implement some rule or law about what kind of animals cannot be taken in as house pets. At least at a zoo they have people who know how to take care of the animals and not give them wine and Xanax. The chimp was causing trouble in the neighborhood for years ("playfully holding up traffic" as one paper put it) Some good must come out of this.
What kind of retard would have a chimp for a PET?!?!? wtf?! Is that even legal? To have a pitbull is not the wisest thing, cuz they can be pretty vicious, imagine having a wild animal roaming around.....
