Bob Guskind, Gowanus Lounge Blogger, Dies

2009_03_guskind.jpg Bob Guskind, whose passion for his Brooklyn neighborhood turned into the popular Gowanus Lounge blog, passed away yesterday. Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn reports that the site was non-operational yesterday—"Readers and fellow bloggers were concerned that their phone calls, and texts were not being returned"—and his death was confirmed by an official from the ME's office (his body was apparently found in his Prospect Heights apartment). Guskind, who was also, until recently, the Brooklyn editor of Curbed, will be missed by many who followed his interest in Brooklyn development issues. Miss Heather has a lovely video of Guskind from this past weekend. Our condolences to his family and friends—and we will miss him, too. Update: The Brooklyn Paper has an account, which is, at turns, sensational and harsh, speculating about Guskind's death. Photo by Louise Crawford

Damn, I really liked that blog. Thanks for the memories Bob, you made Brooklyn a better place.

Condolences to his friends and family from a fellow blogger from Roosevelt Island. Gowanus Lounge was a great blog.

dang. rip bob, you'll be missed. fantastic coverage of bklyn and beyond. condolences to all.

yesterday a commenter on Brownstoner was ripping him a new a-hole because his site wasn't working.
Nice.
Sad day for Brooklyn. You will be missed.

Jesus! This is horrible Bob was a friend to all communities and blogs. This is a shame and it's too bad.

There is a tremendous hole now, in brooklyn news, and news from other neighborhood.

Sorry, Gothamist your way too commercial to fill that void.

Someone needs to get that site back up.

RIP Mr.Guskind

This guy really taught me a lot about Brooklyn and really expanded my horizons in a way. This is such an immense to the NYC blogosphere.

Perhaps the best general-interest blog about Brooklyn.
He will be missed.

Point of information: Our "account" is not an obit, but a news story. People forget that journalists write news stories, not unremitting puffery as I am reading on all the other blogs about Guskind's death.

There will be, in due time, a suitable tribute to a man I actually liked quite a bit. But this is a breaking news story about a person's demise.

You'll read it in NY Magazine next week, no doubt: Death of a Blogger...and you'll be scintillated then.

The Brooklyn Paper

Is that a jab at Gothamist? FWIW, I do think that Jen went a little overboard. I didn't see anything sensational in the "account." Slightly harsh in spots, but the real world tends to have thorns that way.

I sent this to Gersh privately, but he asked me to post it here in the comments so he could respond:

You're an asshole, Gersh. Bob was a private citizen, not some celebrity. He deserves more privacy than what you gave him. Not only that, your story sucks-- all that shit about his personal life was unattributed. If you have a source who is willing to defame the dead, he should stand up and be named. Otherwise you shouldn't use it.

And you probably shouldn't use it anyway, as it's all speculation and rumor. I saw Bob three weeks ago, and let me tell you, he seemed a lot saner than you on an average day.

This isn't about you or Gersh. Have some fucking tact and fight your pointless fight over email so the rest of us don't have to be bored by you two goons. Posting your personal grudge letter is just as disrespectful as you seem to think Gersh's handling of this is.

Stick to pictures of bad graffiti.

Wow Jake, are you and Gersh friends, or do you lash out this harshly to everyone with whom you disagree. Not saying it wasn't warranted, but that is some viciousness. Did you spend too much time around the Finance mba's?

that video on the greenpoint site is one of the best things I've seen in a while. something beautiful is being lost in the rush to build up brooklyn. he knew that. he was from Gowanus, so am I. I bet we would have gotten along. rip.

This crushes me. Bob was one of those souls of the city who cared enough to notice and chronicle it with care and heart. He may have moved elsewhere, but Bob will always be a piece of NYC and Brooklyn.

Bob was a frequent contributor for Brooklyn Independent Television. His love and concern for Brooklyn was apparent on every appearance he made and his presence in our community will be greatly missed.

In remembrance, we've posted a segment Bob did about Carroll Gardens and Gowanus Lounge.

He will be greatly missed.

Bob's segment on BROOKLYN REVIEW.

I never met Bob, but had a great appreciation for Gowanus Lounge and the intimate and wide view the blog presented of Brooklyn. I hope the site returns and my condolences to those who loved him. -umbrooklynborn(blog)

Rest in Peace, Bob. We had the pleasure of working with Bob to redesign Gowanus Lounge and we are very sad to see him go. To a kind and gentle man who will be missed.

Bob will be missed. I'm grateful to have had Gowanus Lounge as a resource and entertainment.

If anyone would care to see Bob when he sat down with Brian Lehrer shortly after the Brooklyn Blogfest:

Bob was an enormous credit to the entire blogging community, not just Brooklyn. He treated the medium with respect, and received great joy from doing it. He was definitely a blog journalism trailblazer.

Bob, the warm spirit and professionalism you brought to the life in Brooklyn will be sorely missed.

R.I.P.

guskind's death saddens me. he was a true and meaningful voice of new york, writing and prioritizing stories that mattered. i'll miss his valuable work.

Gowanus Lounge was cool. And now it's gone:(
