A-Rod Out for 10 Weeks Due to Hip Surgery

2009_03_arodtongue.jpg It's barely March, but it's fair to say that Alex Rodriguez is not having the best year ever. After reports surfaced yesterday that an MRI showed that tightness he was experiencing in his hip stemmed from a cyst, now word is that the cyst will require surgery that will keep A-Rod out for ten weeks. ESPN learned of this from his brother who told them that surgery to remove the cyst is scheduled for Monday in Colorado. Joe Rodriguez said, "It's a big blow for the whole family. Alex is destroyed. But the most important thing is to have a successful surgery so that Alex may continue his career." The procedure obviously means that A-Rod is out for the World Baseball Classic as well as more than a month of the Yankees inaugural year in their new ballpark. And to add insult to injury, just today the Daily News ran a feature of A-Rod's 10 biggest foot in his mouth quotes—our favorite being his allusion to nightly slumber parties with Derek Jeter.

Prediction: Yankees have the hottest start in team history until A-Rod returns. Then they struggle to make the playoffs.

Sadly you probably right.
(about both items.)

Sure, because the player who led the team in home runs and RBIs, batted .302, and had the highest OBP of any Yankee starter last season is so unimportant to them. Basically, while everyone else was slumping early in the season last year he was the one reason they stayed in the race.

Did Alex provide a stool sample?

What is CC's weight? How come he doesn't have any cysts? He must be 320 these days

They are now reporting that it's a torn labrum in his hip as well, which requires more invasive surgery and more like 20 weeks recovery time (see, e.g., Chase Utley, Mike Lowell).

I wonder when the entitled Yankees fans will start demanding that the Mets trade them David Wright straight up for an overrated prospect. I, for one, am looking forward to the Cody Ransom era.

But a story posted at 4:45 pm on ESPN.com now says he might not even need surgery:

"But Thursday afternoon, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the three-time AL MVP will be treated conservatively in the hope of avoiding an operation. Cashman said that if surgery is needed, Rodriguez would be sidelined for four months."

just in time for the opening of that abomination known as the New Yankee Stadium
