A-Rod Leaves WBC for Cyst

2009_03_arodwbc.jpg Alex Rodriguez is headed to Colorado. Don’t get too excited Yankees’ fans; it’s not for a trade, but rather to get a cyst in his right hip checked out by a specialist. After playing yesterday as a member of the Dominican Republic's World Baseball Classic team, A-Rod complained of soreness in his hip and a MRI revealed the cyst. Could the Yankees, never big fans of the WBC, be using this as a way to stop A-Rod from playing in the tournament? The cyst was only part of Alex’s day as he also opened his mouth, always a mistake, and insulted Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter by stating he would like Jose Reyes to leadoff for the Yankees, "I wish (Reyes) was leading off on our team or playing on our team. That’s fun to watch." A-Rod later issued a correction to that statement (maybe he needs to trot out the family again).

OOOOOORRRR maybe he was just giving a compliment to Jose Reyes and not bashing his team members? I'm no fan of Alex Roidriguez, but take it easy.

  • jaycjay

Exactly. Many players, managers, GMs, and fans have said pretty much the same thing (and not just in baseball): "I'd like to have that guy on our team." When saying it, they're not trying to work out how they'd fit that player into the lineup and what other moves would have to made to allow it.

It's just a common form of complement. Like the majority of A-Rod stories, it wouldn't even be a story if it hadn't involved him.

Did Alex have a solid bowel movement yesterday?

  • Guest

Yeah, so the media doesn't feel the need to report it. Just wait until he has explosive diarrhea and then we'll all get to hear every sickening detail from people who call themselves journalists.

I blame the 'roids for the cyst.

I blame Kabbala and the cougar.

"Hip" is often a replacement word for "butt cheek" when it comes to reporting sports injuries, and that's a place where he would have been injecting 'roids.

Just more media douchebaggery. Just because he was complimenting Reyes doesn't mean it was a direct and proportional insult to Damon or Jeter. NY Sports reporters are disgusting assholes. I hope the entire staff of the Post and the News get a food poisoning this week.

Who's the dumb one here? Alex Rodriguez for stating the obvious (Reyes is a firecracker of a leadoff hitter) or Yankees fans for getting slighted that Captain pretty boy might get his feeling hurt?

  • jaycjay

It's not Yankee fans making noise about this, it's sports "journalists" once again blowing something meaningless way out of proportion. Spring training, after the first couple of days there isn't much to report, the game results are unimportant, but deadlines keep coming. Well... did A-Rod say or do anything today? That's always worth writing about!

  • jaycjay

Come on, in no way is that an insult to Damon or Jeter. Reyes is a classic leadoff hitter, which Damon is not. He bats in that slot for the Yankees only because they don't have anyone suitable. Jeter isn't in any way a leadoff guy and while he and Reyes play the same position A-Rod clearly wasn't talking about or thinking about defense.

There aren't many teams in the league that wouldn't be happy to have Reyes leading off for them.

  • ganghiscon

Damon has speed and gets on base more often than Reyes. How is he not better suited to lead off? Just b/c he's a bit older and doesn't steal every time he's on base?
