Map: Flight Patterns Over the U.S.

This is equal parts terrifying and beautiful, a map depicting 24 hours of the nation's flight patterns (two million planes pass through New York's airspace each year). This Google map shows roughly 205,000 aircraft the FAA tracked on August 12th, 2008—with darker colors indicating a higher altitude and lighter lines showing takeoffs and landings.

And if you think that's cool, check out the amazing video that goes along with it. It's like our very own ever-changing constellations. [via Wired]

cool. one way to get a sense of this here in the city (if you have a clear view of the sky to the south) is to watch after sunset especially btw 7 and 9. You can easily spot the lights dozens of planes in a line bound for LGA. sometimes as many as 12 at a time.

Fuck going to Atlanta to go anywhere. Seriously.

It's pretty cool to think there are places that pretty much NEVER see planes overhead.

All I did after 9-11 was look up at the sky at night knowing that the last time it looked like that was 70 years ago.

fuck going through JFK to get anywhere is more like it. I've never been delayed more than 30 minutes at ATL, but JFK/EWR/LGA are all a different story.

What part of this is terrifying?

How about a nice pic depicting 24 hours of the nation's WAR CRIMES?
