NYPD Sued For Not Allowing Cop to Protect and Serve (Jesus)

2009_03_nypdjesus.jpg A 22-year vet is suing the NYPD claiming the Department was guilty of religious persecution when they took his gun and badge away from him. And what cultish fringe deity are the police being intolerant of now? You guessed it—Christianity. Lieutenant Dominic Maglione, a practicing evangelist, says that his intense religious beliefs are what got him kicked off the force. NYPD pension papers say the 44-year-old Maglione lost 40 pounds in six months by fasting and was prescribed an anti-psychotic drug. He also, reportedly, urinated on himself and "saw a demon at 1 Police Plaza." According to a 2004 Daily News article, Maglione is a member of the group Police Officers for Christ, who regularly recruit young officers with tales of the Good News. On the relationship between his faith and his duties, he said, "You have more patience with people. I think it makes you more effective." Another member of the group told the News back then, "We feel God has ordained us to be police officers. God and policing is nothing new. They [cops] all serve God - whether they know it or not."

    Nut jobs. Dangerous nut jobs.

Cut this guy some slack. If you were a very religious person and saw a demon at your place of employment, you might piss yourself too. At least he's not a rapist.

"At least he's not a rapist."

Sadly, this is what our standards has come down to.

    "prescribed an anti-psychotic drug."

And not taking it by the sound of it.

    Straightjacket and butterfly net, please!

Eh, like is or not, religious belief *usually* results in an ethical pattern of behavior. A jesus-freak officer might actually think twice before shooting somebody out of fear, for example. Compared to the cynicism and corruption of some cops, I'd take a force full of born-agains. (Granted, I'd take a force full of intelligent atheists over anything.)

That said, it sounds like this particular guy is batshit crazy.

Ah, that must explain the jihads. And the crusades. The Spanish Inquisition. The priests who molested little boys, girls and other parishioners. Like it or not, religion has been used as an excuse for all sorts of intolerable acts since the dawn of man. Because after all, when was the last time God actually came down here and told anyone that's not what He wanted us to do?

Not someone I want walking around with a gun.

  • ddvrom

Exactly. Obviously unfit to serve the Police much less be trusted with a lethal weapon. Let's keep the crazies on the other side of the law.

Just because his halucination was relgion oriented does not make it any less of a halucination.

Even the two that raped that girl? It's guys like this that give religion a bad name.

I'm not sure who sounds more delusional, the plaintiff or "another member." Personally, I think we need a more solid wall between church and state when people are armed and behind the "blue wall of silence."
