Tea Party Protest Over Federal Stimulus Spending

2009_02_debt.jpg Some people irritated by the government's intervention in the economic crisis gathered at City Hall yesterday to throw a Taxpayer Tea Party. The NY Post reports that organizer Kellen Guida was "inspired to set up the rally after watching CNBC anchor Rick Santelli's scalding rebuke on Feb. 19 of Obama's $275 billion housing bailout last Wednesday." Guida said, "I know my basic economics, and know the stimulus package doesn't work. [Obama] is going to add more to the federal deficit in 20 months than Bush did in eight years." Hmm, maybe Guida doesn't believe in Keynesian economics! Daily Kos contributor stef went to the protest: "It was underwhelming, to say the least... They announced that the new battle would be not Democrats vs. Republicans but Capitalists vs. Socialists. They called for Revolution. They exhorted everyone to send tea bags to 'Nazi Pelosi.' Obama was variously described as a Socialist and a Marxist. They wore stickers that read JOKE with an Obama logo for the O. Most of them arrived via public transit."

Most of them arrived via public transit

What a bunch of socialists. How dare they use government subsidized modes of transportation. They should have floated their via jetpacks, as that is the only way one can truly travel without touching a piece of government subsidized pavement.

  • But Rick Santelli is OK with the Bank Bailout and Corporate Welfare, right?

Naturally, those protesters have no suggestion as to a course of action.

  • NannyState

Republicans are just being crybabies because we didn't invite them to our glorious socialist revolution. I swear the cards were sent out, but the postal service won't deliver on Saturdays anymore.

  • jonathan

Who the fuck is going to build our roads then, assholes.

  • Bottomless Chips

Well the state is supposed to. But they were too busy blowing the good time tax revenues on BS social policies.

  • SP

"hey were too busy blowing the good time tax revenues on BS social policies."

You're calling the Iraq invasion a "social policy?" You really are a pervert. If they had spent that money on education and a national health program, we wouldn't be in this mess today.

SP, I've noticed that you're the master of arguing against no one and strawmanning your arguments on Gothamist.

I was clearly referring to the state government blowing good time tax revenues, as I said, "Well the state is supposed to. But they were too busy blowing the good time tax revenues on BS social policies."

I was not referring to the federal government and made no mention of war. Thanks for putting words into my mouth, though.

If you're asking me about my thoughts on Iraq, I was against it from the beginning. In fact, I'm more dovish than you probably. I want out of the UN, NATO, and our 750+ publicly known bases across the world.

    And I'll bite on this:

If they had spent that money on education and a national health program, we wouldn't be in this mess today.

    How so?

    'the OBAMA' doublespeak translator...

PREZ BARACH'incurably-dishonest'OBAMA states that the UNITED STATES military will wthdraw from IRAQ and cease combat operations by August 31, 2010. But -BUTT - the UNITED STATES will leave 50,000 troops there - do you really think 50,000 men+women with weapons will not engage in combat operations???

PREZ BUTTHEAD-BARRY-the-1st states that 95% of TAXPAYERS will receive a TAX CUT of $13DOLLARS-A-WEEK starting this APRIL. But - BUTT - this 'TAX CUT' is actually a TAX CREDIT and will be billed to us on next year's income tax in a lump sum - not weekly!!!

PREZ BARRY'incurably-fraudulent'OBAMA states that with an increase of $3TRILLION DOLLARS that he claims isn't PORK STIMULUS CRAPPOLA - 'the OBAMA' will cut the deficit by 50%!!! 'the OBAMA' will also walk on the waters before JEFFERSON's monument while 'SHARING-the-WEALTH' others have generated

with the 'minorities'+feckless MARXIST IDIOTS that are his political base along with 'guilty' WHITE DEMBHOLES embracing this BLACK FRAUD although he went to COLUMBIA+HARVARD!!!

And also, he was being fecetious.

  • matty

Santelli talked about a tea party in Lake Michigan in Chicago, not NYC, in case anybody actually saw his rant on here.

Hmm, maybe Guida doesn't believe in Keynesian economics!

Shouldn't we all be skeptical? It's never worked.

Expanding credit in down turns and contracting it in good times just leads to malinvestments and bubbles. The business cycle is a creation that takes down others in collateral damage and is immoral when the alternative (sound money, savings, investment) creates more productivity.

  • cwd22

Anyone who believes in Keynesian economics is ignorant or an idiot. And to quote life-long New Yorker Murray Rothbard, "It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a 'dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance."

  • henricus

Meh, don't assume just because someone finds some fault with Obama that they are upset Republicans. I voted for Obama but am having some trouble not feeling anxious about the stimulus. Several liberal economists on NPR admitted 2 days ago that this stimulus bill rests "on a really rosy picture of a booming economy" next year. I think that picture is a little short-sighted

I'm not even sure what the alternative to the stimulus is, probably a lost decade a la Japan. All the same, the stimulus feels very rushed and a major criticism has been that there is no real plan to it, just throwing money at various agencies.

  • ANGRYGOD11

What a stupid name for a "movement".

The Bostonians who dumped the taxed tea into the harbor had no representation in parliment. These guys must think just because the election with the most voters in history didn't go their way, it doesn't count.

  • Bottomless Chips

Congress is sworn in with the pledge to uphold the Constitution from enemies foreign and domestic.

These assaults* on the Constitution are illegal.

Also, as for the mass transit line in the post---wtf? That's supposed to prove something? I pay an absurdly high state tax and a fucking city tax and SDI tax (whatever that is), and then I pay my fare too. It's like saying a Libertarian is a hypocrite for accepting Social Security: I put my share of money into this system, and it others have too---and it still sucks.

*The printing of money is illegal. Money can be backed by gold and silver. That's it. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 is unconstitutional.

  • "The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 is unconstitutional"?

    Riiiiggggghhhhhtttttt....

And I bet you don't have to pay Federal Income Tax either...

Let me take a wild ass guess: Like, IOM, You think Congress is committing "treason"?

Bottomless is right, no matter what you may think. You must be one of those people who ignores scientific fact when it's staring you down.

  • JacqueMehoff

    interesting read dr. zippy, thnx.

  • dr zippy

Oh, maybe it's because I'm using AdBlock on my browser.

  • JacqueMehoff

I think it was either Newt Gingrich or ron paul who advocated some tea party style action on yesterday's CSPAN coverage of CPAC. it was on at 3am.

  • felixthecat2

Dr. Zippy, I hit the home page and seen some beauties. And yes, I agree on Santelli, he is a boob. and a lot of those young republican girls at the tea party didn't look like economists so I didn't take them too serious.

  • dr zippy

In case anybody is worried, the only two boobs on the Playboy page are Chris Matthews and Rick Santelli.

It should also be pointed out that Kellen Guida is a Republican insider - the Editor-in-Chief and former Publications Committee Chair of New York Young Republicans Club. That's perfectly fine, but people shouldn't be misled to think he's a Joe Blow who has recently become mad as hell and couldn't take it anymore.

Plus, if Guida is upset for being laid-off shouldn't he focus his anger on the party whose governance brought about the poor economic conditions?

  • felixthecat2

dr zippy, thanks for the link, those were great boobs and I am not referring to Santelli.

  • felixthecat2
  • dr zippy

Well, as Playboy has shown, Santelli's "scalding rebuke" was nothing more than a carefully-planned right-wing marketing effort. For example, the ChicagoTeaParty.com website, which seemingly sprouted spontaneously, was actually registered last August.

  • SP

wow, these people are a sad lot.

  • Bottomless Chips

The liberal economists in Washington who think we can spend our way to prosperity and productivity are the saddest lot of all. They're going to bring us all to our knees. Ugh.
