Is Joaquin Phoenix Mentally Ill?

php3v8DbyPM.jpg The debate about Joaquin Phoenix's strange behavior as of late continues. Refusing to believe it's a hoax, despite a camera crew following him around for a documentary, the LA Times is going down the mentally ill route. So far the most talked about display of his new bearded, mumbling persona has been from his appearance on Letterman (which just re-aired last night). The psychiatrist the paper talked to said "much of Phoenix's behavior on Letterman hinted at mental illness, such as wearing sunglasses, which may suggest paranoia. 'There is something wrong. And it's beyond drug abuse.' The public should refrain from mocking Phoenix." So basically he's like 0% crazy, 80% beard and 20% sunglasses. MTV News asked Phoenix's publicist about the Doc's diagnosis, which she labeled: "wildly inappropriate."

  • TrannyMatty

I want to suck Phoenix'd dick!

  • angry_pickle

    douchebaggery

This word is overused. And in Joaquin's case doesn't even make sense unless you love Letterman.

where is the music? has anybody heard the talent?

Having watched the Letterman segment for the second time, I thought Letterman was ugly and insulting to Phoenix. He wasn't playing the plug-your-film interview routine and Letterman had no idea where to go, so he did what others do when they have nothing to say: they resort to cheap insults.

Sure, Phoenix was bizarre, but it didn't require the type of hostility Dave dished out. Sorry, for the first time Dave disgusted me.

Letterman could have anybody as a guest during those five minutes. There's a bargain guests make to appear. Letterman lets you plug your new "thing" but you have to be entertaining and talk to Dave. For whatever reason Phoenix didn't live up to his end of the agreement. By not doing so he was killing the show, a show that Letterman has worked hard at for decades. So, yes, Letterman had every right to treat Phoenix like the dick he was being.

Whew for a moment there I thought I stumbled upon LAist... Now that I have my bearings, who cares if he is nuts? Was he seen selling whistles or batteries on the subway?

If this is indeed a mockumentary, they have gold on their hands right now.

And wearing sunglasses indoors/at night is just a sign of being a look-at-me-attention-whore celebrity. Does not apply here.

He's an actor. Actors do to things:

    1. Act.

    2. Crave Attention.

    That's Dr Nick S's diagnosis.

Maybe he suffered sun stroke while fighting in the Coliseum against that Australian guy. It gets pretty hot in Rome during late July.

  • citizenerased

He's not mentally ill he's just a bored actor acting.

    Octomom is mentally ill

  • BoerumHillJo

I thought Ben Stiller's spoof on Oscar night was the funniest thing in the show. Purely for the fodder, here's hoping this doesn't end soon.

  • theevilone

Unless pretentious douchebaggery is now listed in the DSM IV, I don't think he's mentally ill.

  • El Izzy

    Perfectly stated.

  • NannyState

I have it on good authority that "Agrosocial Douchebaggery" will be a treatable neurosis in the DSM V. Final details may be pending as Mr. Phoenix's condition deepens bringing new insights into the disorder and helping professionals develop reliable therapeutic goals.

  • mzungu

there's got to be more things in LA to report on then dragging this story out and at the same time belittling people who really do have mental illnesses

  • gimme

sunglasses equals illness, hm, like bono?

  • Gregoire

If this were not a joke, certainly somebody close to him would have restrained him by now.

  • jaycjay

And maybe they have. Has he been seen in public anywhere since the Letterman appearance?

  • CR

Maybe... his brother River always seemed a bit unbalanced, and he did die of tragic means. Granted, overdosing on coke isn't suicide, but doing coke ain't exactly healthy behavior...
