Free Books in Brooklyn

The soon-to-be former home of Heights Books on Montague Street recently sold for $3.7 million, so the shop is movin' out and over to 120 Smith Street. But won't they need their books? A reader sent in these photos saying they've "set up a dumpster out front filled with books which presumably won't be following them to their new location. Dozens of people are sifting through the piles of dusty books, although the owner has been discouraging full-on dumpster diving." Though the store specializes in one-of-a-kinds, we're guessing they weren't sloppy enough to toss out any first editions.

Unfortunately, new books must be the worst investment ever,

More books go into dumpsters after a Barnes and Noble opens than when an independent moves or closes.

Donate to the library?????

Sad day. Montegue Street needs more, not less, culture. I do hope those left behind get recycled rather than sent into landfills...

I'm one of the people who helps to run Heights Books. We got rid of unsale-able books, books that had sat on our shelves for years or nearly a decade with no takers, and books that people were dumping on us. (You wouldn't believe how many times we found sacks of books in front of the store when we opened up each morning.) We tried to donate books, but the problem is that those who would love to get donations of books don't have the resources to come get the books, and we didn't have the resources to get the books to them. One honorable exception: Long Island College Hospital took ten cartons of books, as much as they could pick up, for the patients' library.

We hope that all our old friends and as many new friends as possible come to see us at our new location, 120 Smith Street (between Pacific and Dean), when we reopen in mid March.
