A Day in the Life of a Restaurant DOH Inspector

022609barth.jpg As the Department of Health starts moving toward a new restaurant inspection system requiring eateries to display letter grades, the Times tags along with one DOH inspector as he gives a deli buffet in the Financial District the white glove treatment. Inspector Corey Williams explains, "Nobody is glad to see us... You name it, and I’ve seen it. I’ve even seen managers panic and try to take moldy food out the back door while I’m watching." Also lots of rats, both living and dead. During the inspection, owner Peter Kim tells the Times, "My heart is racing. They are so strict. They cost me, $2,000, $3,000, easy, each time they come." Luckily, Williams finds no vermin and Kim squeaks by with a score of 21, the equivalent of a B grade under the new system, which goes into effect in July 2010. That's assuming the restaurant industry, which put up such a fight over the calorie rules, doesn't stop it. One of the industry's main complaints is that although the letter grades must be displayed immediately, restaurateurs still have to wait three weeks to challenge a finding.

Duuhhhhhiiiiiii heard that!

Great photo of Barth. I loved YCDTOTV.

The picture was the highlight of my day. Thank you, guy from the computer.

I don't know who Barth is. Hey.... what's..... slime.... groooossssss!

I'm so glad this is happening.

Why is NY so behind LA when it comes to food inspection.

I just got food poisoning, and was out of work for 3 days.

you only care because it affected *you*, you selfish prick.

STOP WHINING

"They are so strict. They cost me, $2,000, $3,000, easy, each time they come"

Maybe you should, you know, keep the place clean.

Best comedy, besides Kids in the Hall to come from our northern neighbors...

Future Trend:

Drunk fratboys daring each other to eat in an F-rated restaurant.

Barth has got his Bobby Jindal goin'.

There aren't restaurants open with a below c grade. You get shut down if you can't make the grade.

Fantastic, about damn time this happened in NYC. This has been in NC for about 15 years or more now. If somewhere has a B grade you just don't eat there; it really hurts business if your letter grade isn't up to snuff.

I'm a big fan of this push, but let's face it - the already small number of decent places to eat in FiDi are going to dwindle further. Between the rivers and all of the neverending construction on every other street, mice and rats are everywhere.

I stopped looking at the NYC inspection reports last year after 5 of my favorite lunch spots got nailed.

Its not just about the rats ( its a small point docker ) but the temperature of coolers, if there is any food on the floor (not elevated). If there are any dead bugs in the coolers thereby discovering how many times they clean open food areas throughout the day.
If the only area to clean your hands or food is right next to the toilet in the kitchen, then of course you get docked for that.

When restaurants or delis get shut down, its not JUST because of RATS. There are other factors that are included in the report.

love Love LOVE how you used the photo of the guy from "You Can't Do That On Television."

Your making that point was very divulgent.
