THEATER: A new production of Shakespeare's Othello has been getting stellar reviews, most importantly from Charles Isherwood at the Times. Since there's little need for plot synopsis, let's get right to Chuck's rave: "Shakespeare is the star here, but he is handled with the kind of artistry we always hope for and rarely find. This is among the most sensitively directed, eloquently designed and impeccably acted productions of a Shakespeare tragedy that the city has seen in years... The process by which Othello’s love is corrupted and coarsened into something monstrous is revealed with a clarity that rings terribly true." — John Del Signore
7 p.m. // The Duke on 42nd Street [229 West 42nd St] // Call (646) 223-3010 for tickets.
EVENT: Tonight Cinema 16 takes over the Bell House, celebrating and reviving the era of silent film. "Named after the New York-based avant-garde film society in 1947 and inspired by Maya Deren's Greenwich Village exhibition of experimental films, Cinema 16 pairs edgy contemporary musical artists with vintage films." Tonight join Artanker Convoy as they live score an abstract animation by Harry Smith and An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Robert Enrico. Following them The Wild Yaks "will feature short silent films—leftist group Public Theater's Pie in the Sky and Edwin S. Porter's Dream of a Rarebit Fiend."
