Family of Fatally Tasered Man Suing NYPD, City, Cops, etc.

022509taserman.jpg The family of an emotionally disturbed man who fell ten feet to his death after being Tasered by a cop has now filed a lawsuit, surprising no one. You'll recall, with attendant wave of revulsion, that after the incident made headlines last September, the NYPD admitted that the use of the stun gun appeared to violate department guidelines. Then the grief-stricken lieutenant who ordered the Tasering committed suicide. It was a horrible story all around, complete with grisly video. And according to the AP, the family of the victim, Iman Morales, isn't just suing the city, the NYPD, and two officers involved in the incident—they're also suing the estate of the officer who committed suicide. They're seeking $10 million in damages; a spokesperson for the city law department called it "a very tragic case."

Human nature at its finest: do not call the cops if you expect them to help out and then punish them for trying to save themselves from bodily harm when a crazy person is waving a light post at them. Shame on them; two people are dead because of one family not getting their loved one the proper help he needed. Now a cop is dead, his wife & children are without a father and the deceased family just wants to cash in...wow, just when I thought nothing would shock me anymore!!

    pathetic

we should be taking this mom to task for not making sure her son was in an institution so that this wouldn't have happened in the first place

Unfortunately I'm not surprised by this at all, the disgrace of a human being they call this guys mother and her pathetic attempts to look distraught on the news interviews(failing miserably)it was only a matter of time for jumped on the chance to cash in.

"—they're also suing the estate of the officer who committed suicide."

Here's a buck for car fare, now fuck off.

What is extremely disturbing is that the cop who actually fired the Taser was cleared of all wrongdoing and has been promoted to detective. The fact that he had been ordered to do so is, or should be, no defense whatsoever.

ok, it seems 100% justified to sue the nypd and i guess the city (not sure what the technicalities are on that). but suing the dead officer's estate? really? it's not like they are going to be hurting for money with the slam dunk against the nypd and city. that's a low blow
