Video: NYU Occupation's Awkward End

We may have mentioned that the occupation of NYU's student center ended with a whimper, but after watching this 9:22 minute video of NYU security daring to enter the barricaded cafeteria occupied by student protesters last week, we're worried our faces are now permanently frozen in deep cringe. According to NYU Local, the footage was recorded not by an NYU student but by a strident young man from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA., who seems truly appalled that officials have violated their inner sanctum, "making everyone very upset," while also deliberately ignoring his orders: "You may not detain us, you are on camera!"

We're posting it without further comment, but be warned; what you are about to see may irrevocably shatter your romantic image of brave, student revolutionaries watering the tree of budget transparency with their blood. The most disillusioning moment, perhaps, comes at the 5:40 mark, when one female protester begins shrieking, "He touched me! He grabbed me by the shoulders! I was forcefully removed from the balcony!"

What is most frustrating is that many of NYU's policies are extremely detrimental to the surrounding community, and this was no where on these kids' agenda.

We honestly could give a damn about having access to your library. We just want you to stop displacing long-term residents and businesses, and we want you to stop over-developing the area. And when you move off campus to have a more "authentic" experience, you are driving up rents for the people you're trying to get closer to.

NYU's expansionist plans are a direct threat to our community. With that in mind, getting NYU to have a transparent budget would have been helpful. Knowing where the money goes would have been eye-opening. But really, this action was a major step backwards.

"...um, water bottles...nah, they don't want water bottles, they probably drink corporate water."

To quote that David after Dentist video: is this real life??

Further proof that Intelligence, Passion, Creativity and Integrity skipped a generation. The chilling part is there aren't enough Starbucks to contain the vapidity.

  • Dude69

I though these morons would have learned something from the New School mess, but obviously these bozos were busy stuffing themselves with vegan cookies. If I were Sexton I would have sent in the NYPD on day one to show what the valiant 60's anti-war and civil rights protestors had to go through for change. I bet they run straight back to mom and dad when the batons start raining down on their fat heads! I advise them to take a class on civil disobedience with the "Die Yuppie Scum" LES crusties.

  • Pull My Finger

Let me know when the topless babes protest again.

Jesus this cameraman is a GIANT cunt.

Those NYU students were perfect examples of effete douchebaggery.

Was this whole fiasco initiated by a group of exchange students from Iraq?

The corporate water hater has a whole freaking Apple store in his backpack? Really?

Fuck NYU. It brings out the worst in everybody, no kidding.

Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government.

#37: They have made less radical attempts to engage with the administration and educate the student body before this. http://takebacknyu.com/history/

  • Clarice City

Perhaps they could send some of those expensive Apple products, that they so carefully itemized, over to students in Gaza if they're so committed to the cause.

  • ides_of_march

Wish I knew about this shindig ahead of time. I would have sold Che Guevara t-shirts outside and made a small fortune.

Great blog that criticized the TBNYU debacle. Our friend Alex wrote in, trying to defend his band of kindergarteners, only to be cut down again.

    Another thought:

Protest like this needs to be a last option. Have you attempted to open channels of communication re: your problems with NYU? If you can show that good faith efforts to change things "through the system" have failed, largely due to a unresponsive power structure, you gain more sympathy and justification for your protest.

As it was, it seemed like NYU kids just didn't find formal discussions through student govt. etc. cool or fun enough- so they decided to do this. Protests aren't for fun. Either that, or they were so self-assured that talking to "suit wearing, corporate water drinking" asses wouldn't be productive b/c, well, they're EVIL man. *sigh* again.

  • ides_of_march

    consenus = lack of leadership

I love how they protest for transparency then want to negotiate in a back room in private.

  • Past Taliban

I pooped a turd at NYU that looks like GW Bush yet smells much better.

  • famdoc

Good thing Sully didn't go to NYU (see story below).

  • ides_of_march

Exile these pampered, narcissistic little brats to Cuba or North Korea so they can learn what real brutality is.

  • Vertigone

I'm sure in their heads it played out a lot better. Where one day they would proudly tell their grandchildren about when they fearlessly fought the oppression of the corporate water drinking NYU administration.

hahahaha...kids and their Macbooks and Macbook chargers.

  • breaknight

Wow, not exactly Paris in '68, or the Berkeley Free Speech Movement.

As someone sympathetic to a few of the protesters (endless) demands, this is sad that the most high profile challenge to prevailing system of higher education in the U.S. was carried out by a bunch of unorganized, unprepared, naive NYU students.

If you are going to occupy a space, you need to plan for contingencies and by ready to react. There also need to be some people willing and brave/crazy enough to take things to the next level if the police just decide, "well, why don't we just go in there and kick them out". This was pathetic. You need to be prepared and organized w/either non-violent extreme means or violent ones, so that NYU knows, if they go in it's gonna be a shitstorm and the images will be on the nightly news- and what sort of images are they willing to put up with? i.e. are they willing to live with images of 18 year old white girls being carried out bloodied and beaten by 6'3'' NYU police officer? That keeps them at bay. Not topless smokers. But nobody seemed interested in taking this thing beyond a faintly radical slumber party.

This is also a function of NYU kids- they can't even organize themselves to have a successful protest movement. Its a mix of unambitious daddy's princesses; unfocused, uber-hip, overprivileged assholes who revel in an aloof, masturbatory, self-satisfied detachment from any form of political thought; and vaguely political disenchanted suburban youth who know something is "fucked up" about this world, but are so crippled by all their Foucault and Baudrillard that they can't bring themselves to actually pinpoint an objective and formulate some sort of counter action.

Just sad, but at least we have a well documented example of what NOT to do.

  • pal

    this is hilarious!!!

    thanks for posting this.

    Ahhh morons.

    Gotta love em!

  • pedrom

These kids are shockingly dense. Is this what we can expect from a generation inspired by Youtube clips and Twitter posts? You need more than a Macbook and a video camera, you need some brains.

  • valeriob

I sincerely hope that NYU staff and students read all the wonderful Gothamist posts.

    NYWho?

  • Papercutninja

they're not reading gothamist. They're readying their next protest against the inclusion of non artisanal whole-grain breads at the student center and how this will negatively impact the slums of Sub-Saharan Africa. Meanwhile, they're writing a performance art piece about Suburban-Privileged-Existentialism in the early 21st Century.

Also, they're ducking the bottles and rocks being thrown at them by ACTUAL NYU STUDENTS WHO ARE THERE TO LEARN BECAUSE NYU IS A FUCKING COLLEGE.

  • suepart

thank you for this hilarious crap. this should have won the oscars for best comedy.

expel all these douchebags, that's my democratic consensus for these clowns.

  • mangell

How does "Don't Touch Me" girl deal with a crowded subway?

  • Outter Burrougher

I don't know, maybe this is all a conspiracy by the administration to make themselves look better.

anyway, as much as they did have a couple of good points in their demands, these are bored kids who want to be martyred and mean something. these are the kind of people who wish they had been alive for Vietnam, who wish they had been attacked at Kent State. This is egoism.

  • Outter Burrougher

you think she deigns to take the subway?

  • angry_pickle

The cameraman is obviously had a sheltered upbringing. This is "brutality"?

Situations like this require leadership; not a democratic consensus from all idiots.

  • famdoc

a few comments, many of which have been made by others:

1--This guy from Muhlenberg College...once his name is revealed will never, never be able to get a job. As an employer, I do, that's right, I do, google and facebook potential employees. Do I want to hire a sociopath? A person with a criminal record? Someone who drinks 21 beers at a party and posts photos of his puke? I don't think so.

2--Let's say I come home from dinner with my wife. We find a group of people in our living room whom we did not invite. Am I going to give them 10 minutes to reach consensus about whether they're going to accept my demand to vacate the premises. I don't think so.

NYU officials exercised incredible restraint. A few billy clubs and handcuffs would have brought this exercise to its end a little sooner.

    3--Trespassing.

thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion.

it didn't necessitate an occupation of the gothamist executive suite.

  • rubberbrand

His name is Alex Lotorto. Enjoy a life free from his existence.

  • ides_of_march

On the other hand, the ACLU will also google these same names, see a bunch of petulant junior marxists throwing a tantrum and offer them a position immediately.

  • agreed. But you can't "facebook" everyone, most people lock their accounts to outside users.

  • TimSPC

It's too much. It's too brutal. What has been seen can not be unseen.

  • Papercutninja

ahh these poor suburban kids...trying to fight "the man". one of the bitches actually said that her parents were going to be "so mad" when they found out that NYU did this to them. If you're still referring to your "parents" sticking up for you, you shouldn't be protesting. Little girl.

  • imadick

why y'all gotta hate so much? these fools tried hard for their college experience. it's better this than getting wasted and dying of alcohol poisoning in the middle of washington square.

    Is it?

As NYU Staff and Security enter the cafeteria,

Cameraman : "You may not come in here!"

No you idiot,YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED IN THERE. This guy isn't not even a NYU student. You can hear the panic in his voice as the NYU staff keep asking for NYU ID.

  • Huffy6241

"There is no cooperation. You guys need to leave."

    Awesome!

Seems like a pretty exciting sleepover camp withouth counselors.

  • WesleySnipesAlot

    make that two alumni. ('05)

  • longacre

This makes me embarrassed that I ever applied to NYU, nevermind the fact that I was accepted. (Thankfully I didn't go).

  • It's been said before: "Morons".

And to be clear, I mean the "Protesters".

"Using consensus to decide"?? Just Wow.

There obviously was no leadership there.

Loved the "You may not detain us, you are on camera!"...

  • Dirk

    Sigh... truly pathetic...

  • I'm not a huge lover of NYU, mainly for real estate reasons, but I think these idiot students need to enroll in constitutional law before trying shit like this again.
